View Full Version here: : Russia, US, China developing thermonuclear armed hypersonic boost-glide missiles
In an article a few hours ago in the Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/russia-is-poised-to-add-a-new-hypersonic-nuclear-warhead-to-its-arsenal/2018/12/26/e9b89374-0934-11e9-8942-0ef442e59094_story.html?utm_term=.1 dc93dfc07e5), Anton Troianovski
and Paul Sonne report on the announcement by Russia that it had
"conducted a final test of a nuclear-capable glider that flies at 20 times
the speed of sound".
Such weapons are designed to attempt to circumvent the efficacy of
an anti-ballistic missile system.
In a video, the Washington Post interviews U.S. Secretary of the Air Force
Heather Wilson who discusses plans for a joint US Air Force/Army project
to fast-track the development of a hypersonic gliding missile weapon,
which potentially further ushers in a new nuclear weapons arms race.

I shake my head at this type of weapons development....what is it that Man has to display his ' one up man ship ' to show his capability to destroy others.
There seems to be a never ending pursuit of.... ' I've got the biggest Gun ' .... so the ' others ' go about developing something even better .
What's the point of it all...Why ....Why do they do it ...!!
Is it ' EGO ' on a Grand Scale..!!
I continue to shake my head

So true, so much energy and money and brain matter spent on figuring out how to destroy others more efficiently. It's laughable when you take a few step backs and you realise they're sawing the same branch they're all sitting on.

The Cold War has heated up again, thanks to Putin and Trump. Both are outright liars and crooks and one is an idiot to boot.

It's only the odd psychopath who fits that description - unfortunately the worst seem to be leading the most powerful countries.
Most people just want a quiet life, a job and opportunities for their kids.
If they all worked together and spent all that money on space exploration.
We would all be going for skiing holidays on Pluto by now. :screwy:

What a bunch of cowardly, sub-endowed, girly-men they all are. Not a single Pair between any of them. Nothing good in any of this.

Pretty sure Heather Wilson is a woman ....plenty of women involved in and actively encouraging all this stuff, many millions of them voted for Trump too....just saying. ☺

Just more stuff to keep populations guessing and demanding strong leaders that they now perceive as necessary to stand up to the strong leader on the other side.
No one will use these weapons ... so a waste of money...they should be building battle stars to head off the aliens at the edge of the Solar System...jobs for everyone.

Yeah, granted my quoting of girly-man wasn't the best choice. It doesn't make things any better if women are involved in this. It's all patheic war mongering.
Makes the human species no better than locusts. Worse really, as locusts have no choice. We do.

Chants "Build the dome...Build the dome"
War and preparation for war are amongst the best economic engines in existence. As a result it's a great mechanism for wealth transfer and that's why war and preparation for war will ways exist, until somehow, someday we all wake up and drive change.

In a story today in the Washington Post, following the U.S withdrawal,
Russia has suspended the medium range nuclear weapons pact and
promised new weapons, including the hypersonic missile.

Hi All
Quote from first link - Russia on Wednesday conducted a final test of a nuclear-capable glider that flies at 20 times the speed of sound, President Vladimir Putin said, adding that the weapon will be included in the country’s arsenal next year.
Quote from Gary's post - Putin ordered his military to start developing land-based missiles that could deliver nuclear warheads in the range prohibited by the treaty, including a hypersonic version.
These two quotes don't match to me!
Also, what is the fastest airspeed that has been attained? I haven't yet found anything at even Mach 10.
I also don't think much of most national leaders.

Has any side really stopped developing new weapons or piling up since the reagan/gorbachev signing? I think not. Now at least they can keep doing it plain sight again.

Precisely Marc.
The USA NEVER did abide by the INF anyway, developing submarine and aerial delivery methods that directly contravened it in a loophole manner. To deny the USA did so is thinking with a propagandised, brainwashed and deluded mind.
Fact is, the USA is just as evil - you just don't hear it because we are now THAT propaganda deluged that even apparently thinking people now believe the transparent dribble that flows from main stream media outlets and the US State Department.
Or simply don't care anymore, so long as it is not in their back yard...
The US is running on fear, anxiety and utterly exasperated that another power has surpassed US military technology. The Cold War got reversed. Now its the Yanks playing catch-up, all the while their country is falling apart at the seams. End of Empire flailing and thrashing....

I think that is a very lazy response, have you have any idea what China has been up to?

It really does seem to be fashionable to bag the USA. Generally with no actual understanding of history. While the US and the west, in general, aren't saints do you really think they (and us for that matter) are comparable to the Russians and the Chinese?
Hi Philip,
Thanks for the post.
These are two distinctly different developments.
The Russian hypersonic glide vehicles known by the name 'Avangard',
which was tested in late December 2018, are designed to be
multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRV) for use
with ICBMs.
The treaty that the United States and Russia has pulled out of is
called the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.
It eliminated all US and Russian land-based ballistic and cruise missiles,
as well as their launchers, with ranges of 500–1,000 kilometers
(short medium-range) and 1,000–5,500 km (intermediate-range).
Air and sea-launched missiles were not covered by the treaty.
So when Putin says he has ordered the development of a hypersonic
glider for use on a medium range missile, that is a distinctly
new and different development to the 'Avangard' glider which was
designed as a MIRV payload on more powerful , heavy-lifting ICBMs.
The INF Treaty was primarily designed to try and reduce the risk of
a 'hair-trigger' nuclear war starting in the European and western
Russian theatres.
The treaty was verified by routine inspections between the Americans
and the Russians.
One complication has been that China, who is not a signatory to the
treaty, has been rapidly building large numbers of medium range
missiles.
The threat of a hypersonic glider on a medium range weapon is that
there is no effective anti-ballistic missile system that could prevent it
from delivering its thermonuclear payload.
On the 26th Dec 2018 test, the Russians claimed that Avangard was tested at Mach 27.

Hmm, the older I get (and perhaps wiser?), the more distrust of America I have, and more sympathy for the Russian "side". The US always smack of self-defence no matter the cost to anyone else.

Between China, Russia and the US I still like living in a democratic system, even if it's still an illusion. Nothing's perfect but there are still a few pockets of great places to live in on this planet and we're right in the best one of them in Oz. Short range weapons are an increased risk of a mishap with a trigger happy general. Until that happens let's keep imaging.

This is a rabbit hole we can't go down here, but I am in total agreement with you. I will say though that at least under Trump - as much of an absolute buffoon he and his administration are - that their transparency (good, bad and indifferent, deliberate or just plain mis-handling) has opened MANY eyes and minds globally to the reality of the hegemonic and imperialistic monster the US really is.

we need one world Government to manage resourses and build Battle Stars to patrol the outter Solar System.
Not only to hold back the Aliens who just call by when ever they please..we need a wall really...but also the Battle Stars should be able to head off any large rocks lining up to take out more dinasours...or any other animals really...including us.
Now we should save money by consolidating all Governements and securing major discounts thru major bulk buying...the Military spending can be more structured to space travel and the big animal could start planning other planet outposts...but the main benefit would be to slowly move the military opperations to the outter solar system where they can blow up stuff to their hearts content.
I read a great deal of history and it is clear that war is just one thing that one thinks of when you think of the human...the death through war ...and China is a great place to look at war...never take them on it is going to be something they will do better than anyone...anyways the reason I first moved to the country was to get away from the prospect of war and global warming so I am not worried:P.

Hi Barry,
Despite "Dr. Strangelove" demonstrating the self-evident danger of
building something as macabre as the Doomsday Machine, the Russians
went ahead and built something similar during the Cold War.
Designated "Perimetr" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Hand) and known in the West as "Dead Hand", it was
supposedly originally designed to decide on its own whether the Soviet
Union was under attack and then to automatically launch a retaliatory strike.
There are rumours that "Perimetr" is still in existence and
that since the flight-time for medium range missiles near the
Russian border may be as short as two or three minutes, there
was a recent suggestion (https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/russias-dead-hand-nuclear-doomsday-weapon-back-38492) by a retired Russian missile commander
that they may need to rely upon it.
2009 Wired article on "Perimetr" :-
https://www.wired.com/2009/09/mf-deadhand/
There was the recent "The Putin Interviews" by Oliver Stone where
Stone, after learning that Putin has never seen "Dr Strangelove",
convinces him to watch it.
