Apparently this is nearing completion. When it's finished, they'll be taking orders from IIS-ers.

I don't mean to sound cheap, but if I take two is there any sort of discount? :P

Thinking of binocular James Webbs then are we?

Trust me, by the time that hits space, I will have progressed way past binoculars...providing of course I am not actually loose star stuff by then, as opposed to compressed star stuff now ;)

I think they need to cover it more, they have shielded it from the Sun but its expossed on the other side. They have a baffle but would you not think that it would be better to cover all of it? Sortta like a dob wearing a dress if you see what I mean.. I know its not optical but would it not be better shielded all around?

No ... er ... what?

I meant really BIG binoculars like these ones:
http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=17077
... only with 6.6m mirrors!

Oh well, never mind, silly idea anyway :screwy:.

Alex, you could be right about the shielding, after all, the Hubble did have a 'minor' problem on first light. It might be history repeating itself.

Big, it's such a small word, were you referring to this?

What seems good on paper can miss little things although Hubble was not a design flaw but a spec of paint stuffing up certain references.
I know from being in a dark site stray star light creeps in and maybe that could be a problem up there although working with in another part of the spectrum , maybe it seems inconsequential but they are the things that get you. and besides with out more shielding is does not look like a real scope:lol:
Big binos way to go.:eyepop:

It was a picture of a very large binocular telescope, when I say very large, I mean gigantic :eyepop:

Then I want one to

DobDobDob

...and you can, provided you have a small to medium Government backing you financially... ;)

Oh sure that..no no no .. its a kingdom and although bigger than some countries I only have one subject:D .. sorry including the dogs four subjects:D :D . The trouble is we are so far away from things we cant afford transport to invade anything and plunder for revenue:) . AND to be honest the balance of trade figures just came out and they are down a little on last year:lol:   . Still one of my subjects has been hard at work laying cement for the new state of the art observatory and the main building 1.8 mtr x 1.8 mtr will be erected upon my return to the kingdom. The other three subjects have been defending the borders from the Kangarro people who invade usually at night and have been getting closer to the observatory site. Security is now of a grave concern. I am here in Sydney on a diplomatic mission our behalf of the kingdom and fear three of the subjects are planning an overthrow. Difficult times but the openning of the observatory is to coincide with my coronation:lol:   .

It looks a bit delicate, but I can't wait for it to be operational as we should get some amazing pictures. Does the 50 x per inch of aperture rule apply in space? Got to be a better vantage point than my back yard.

I think it is not going to work in the same part of the spectrum as in your backyard but if it did the rule is finally related to seeing conditions so we would find maybe you could use your smallest EP and your biggest barlow up there....maybe.

The US space agency Nasa has unveiled a model of a space telescope that scientists say will be able to see to the farthest reaches of the Universe. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is intended to replace the ageing Hubble telescope.
It will be larger than its predecessor, sit farther from Earth and have a giant mirror to enable it to see more.
Officials said the JWST - named after a former Nasa administrator - was on course for launch in June 2013.
The full-scale model is being displayed outside the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in the US capital, Washington DC.
It was recently shown off in Seattle at the American Astronomical Society meeting...
The $4.5bn (£2.3bn) telescope will take up a position some 1.5 million km (930,000 miles) from Earth.
It will measure 24m (80ft) long by 12m (40ft) high and incorporate a hexagonal mirror 6.5m (21.3ft) in diameter, almost three times the size of Hubble's...
