Yea!!

I know this doesn't sound like a big deal but, I finaly got up on the right morning to have a peek at Jupiters GRS. And it was worth it!

There was also a bright pin prick spot on the very edge of the planet which I'm assuming is one of the moons either passing in front or behind the planet?

Hey Dean.

It's always great to see something new on the planet. Jupiter is an amazing dynamic place.
The moon you saw was Ganymede.

Download and install the program called Jupiter 2 (http://www.astrosurf.com/rondi/jupiter/). Just put in the timezone and it will show you the position of the GRS and satellites so you can predict transits in advance so you know when to get up to observe (or in my case, image :)). It's a great program, and I use it every day during Jupiter season.

Thanks Mike

Jupiter 2 reminds me of afternoons after school in front of the tele.....
Really nice images on your new steup by the way. Very impressive!!!

Its an interesting part of the sky to have a sticky at. Globular Cluster (love saying Globular Cluster) M4 near Antares is impressive as is M19, M62, and N6397. Plus several Open Clusters. All from the comfort of the back deck without having to drag the scope into the back yard.

It took me years to see the GRS - it's rather easy to miss unless you pay attention! I've had people tell me they used to see it in little 60mm refractors in the late 1960's but now I usually refer to it as the Great Biege Spot.

Satellite events are neat. Dont just go for the transits, watch out for a few eclipses too. Some of my friends like to watch for the change in colour as the moon enter and exit Jupiter's penumbra.

After a while satellites get annoying too

Just as you are having a good deep look at an object, one zooms thru the FOV. And it happens a lot!!!!!!

Congrats Deeno on your GRS adventure!

Great Beige Spot is more appropriate

Penumbra - Like the sound of that! It’s going to take years to learn the right jargon

I've been at this my whole life (and 23 years of that at the scope) and I don't know the Jargon

'Fuzzy Blob' is my favourite.
