Hi guys,

I recently stripped my mount down but haven't been able to get a hold of some new bearings for the worm drive mounts.

I never caught a part number or size for the bearings and have since put the mount back together.

Does anyone know the size or a part number I can use to order some Hybrid- Ceramic ones?

If all else fails I can strip the mount again to get sizing, but trying to avoid having to do that for now. (Ordering is going to take a few weeks over christmas I imagine and don't want my mount in parts around the house over the holidays.)

I found this:

In HEQ5 there are following bearings:

6x 6006 2RS - these are main RA and Dec shafts bearings
2x 30205 - tapered roller bearings
4x 689z (or 618/9) - these are small bearings for worm shafts
I used EZO bearings for worm and SKF/Timken for others.

As for plastic washers - these are used for precise placement of worm at worm wheel. There probably should be some washers already, because if you want to replace them, you need to use new one with the same thickness. I cut out proper dimension washers from teflon foil.

Thanks for that Ken,

I used FAG bearings for 6006-2RS and Timken for the Taper bearings also.

Just the bearing shop in town doesn't stock the smaller ones unfortunately.

Did you just use standard bearings for the small worm drive ones? or go for the hybrid ceramic like everyone recommends?


Also with regards to the plastic washers. My mount had red fibre washes on both axis, instead of one plastic/ teflon and one fibre washer as per the guide by astrobaby. I'm going to assume this isn't a problem as my mount performs pretty well. (After my previous tune up it was consistently doing sub 1" guiding for hours.

Not my data....I've had my HEQ5 for over twelve years and never had the need to strip and re-grease etc.
I honestly believe (based on being a mechanical engineer with 50 years experience) that ceramic bearings in this application are all marketing hype.

The slow rotation and light loads only needs a smooth capable bearing....

I kind of doubted the fact these Ceramic Bearings would make a noticeable difference.

At least my wallet will be happier. Hybrid Ceramic Bearings were going to run up around $60 a bearing :eyepop:
