That’s crazy. I mean, the guy is obviously a nut, but 2 years in prison?? Wow...

There was an article about it saying that the US take "soft crime" very seriously and that's why after the 2008 GFC a lot of bankers went to jail for malpractice. Then went on to say that none went to jail, and they're back peddling the same sh!t now. This bloke got the sh!ts with being banned repeatedly from CN, got some hackers to DDOS two websites and coped 26 months, $25k in court costs and $5k in damages. Pretty harsh.

I really hope that we haven’t read the full story, and in reality that man is a violent preconvicted tool who had it coming. It would be a shocking sentence to an otherwise „law abiding“ person with no criminal history.

True. Maybe we don't know the whole story. It seems pretty harsh otherwise. Then again when you read the FBI warnings, fines and jail sentences on bluray and DVDs it makes your skin crawl too and you think "really?...."

Sentences in the US are generally considerably more severe than those in Australia for a similar offence.
Whether you'd be convicted is an entirely different matter.

He threatened moderators and users, posted porn on the site and deliberately tried to damage a business (Astronomics). I have little sympathy for him.

Well, a denial of service attack is intended to harm the target. That is no small matter. A DOS attack on CloudyNights is no different in effect from a DOS to say NASA or Boeing. The idea is to maximise inconvenience and disruption and to cause all consequent harm including financial. It is malicious, deliberate harm. In my view, anyone doing this deserves what they get. The law is not unknown. The penalties are known. The risk is known. Their bad!
