Nah. Sorry.
Colour is a random re-map to my eye and I'm seeing diffraction spikes from a refractor?
Colourful, yes.
But is this astrophotography.. or an exercise in Photoshop 103?

Martin spent the time and effort in capturing 10 hours of data plus many hours of processing time. Is this astrophotography? I would say most definently. There are many of us here on this forum that would die to be able to achieve a final result like that. As for color mapping, isn't it all subjective?

I am not a fan of randomly mapping colours to objects that have intrinsic colour, (with the exception of Narrow Band imaging)
This is a beautiful region of the sky that showcases many natural and surprising colours that don’t need “creative” modifications. Sure, you can photoshop them, there is no law against this, nor is there one for adding in star spikes, or drawing in a nice hat for the horsie.... but where do you draw the line? I’d rather strive for accuracy over fantasy.

Hi Martin,
it looks great to me except in full resolution where
there is very bad coma in every corner & many processing artifacts.
Are you using a corrector?
I like it when a photographer takes some artistic license to produce
something different & you've achieved that.
cheers

Well, aside from any arguments about color and scientific fidelity, it is a thrilling image that fires the imagination. Nicely composed and balanced field too.

Peter Ward lost the plot it could be is book of Genesis
Thanks very much Bananas Peter for your comment.
Thanks Andrew and Cam for your welcome feedback
Thanks Apal for your feedback The distance to the sensor on the ccd is slightly out point taken much appreciated.
Thanks Graeme it gives some confidence in Astro imaging that can be challenging. Thanks Guys.

I find the image very dramatic.
Its surprisingly 3D. The Horsehead is very much in front of that rear curtain and the Flame Nebula is wonderfully shown with its drama and then it turns into little pillows at the edges. Its an unusual nebula.
Its quite a small bit of coma it could be from tilt as I could only see it on the right side not the left. Spacing would have it on all 4 corners I would think.
Tilt is common and not often corrected. You may have slightly off spacing and tilt.
I have developed a procedure for correcting it if you are interested. Send me a PM if you want and I'll outline it.
Greg.
