Am I crazy, or does another 7518 Starlink satellites, on top of the already approved 4400, seems like true madness. Sure they are small, but don't we have enough junk up there already. And how is it that the US FCC has the right to approve these things without global consultation. The Earth is going to wind up looking like Saturn, except our ring will be space garbage.

Serious though - is this just an infrastructure building / preparatory move towards the Mars colony, etc?

I believe that every nation has the right to launch satellite without international consultation. International law governs the process and responsibililties, which is under the mandate of the UN (http://www.unoosa.org/oosa/en/aboutus/roles-responsibilities.html)
Active satellites by country: https://www.n2yo.com/satellites/?c=&t=country (https://www.n2yo.com/satellites/?c=&t=country)

I am old enough to remember when there was nothing up there. It seems that humans are treating all environments with equal distain, which does not bode well for Marttian colonisation. Does anyone expect Musk to remove his garbage from Mars, and he can start with that Tesla.
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's ...
