I received 2 message's , one after another yesterday saying ' Colin, your bank account has been suspended ...please follow this link to verify your details.
You may have difficulty logging in .. and access may be denied until you confirm your details.
My immediate thought was ... What BS, I'll go and log on to my Bank and see if this is indeed a legitimate message from the Bank.
Well I had no problem logging in straight away ( that confirmed my suspicion ) ..... My Bank has a page where you can ' lookup ' the latest scams regarding to their financial institution......and there it was for all customers to read, was the scam message I received regarding the sms message sent to my Mobile.
My Bank states ' that we ( the bank ) will never ever send an ' sms ' asking you for bank details.... period '
The only thing that still has me wondering is .... how did these ' scammers' get my mobile number and they new my first name.

Plenty of people here would that info about you Colin and perhaps more. Information is relatively easy to mine these days.
For instance Lewis gave us all a map to his house here two days ago in a thread about light pollution...

You didn't enter any competitions did you Col?
There was a report on the ABC news today, about a fake competition advertised on Facebook, winning a 10 day cruise on a P&O liner and $5,000 spending money, it was a scam to collect peoples private information.

There's another obne going around - phone call saying
I'm calling about your accident!" That's as far as they have got with me so far (3 calls last week) before I advised them where they and their friends should go. Apparently the rest of the speil would have involved their telling me they were able to expedite insurance claims or some such if I would share my bank details for payout purposes.
Peter
Yeah I saw that too.
I'm still a little miffed about a comment he made about one of my pictures a while ago so I'm going to pay him a visit.:rofl::rofl:

I had received an SMS about 18 months ago from a blocked number, claiming to be from Commbank. The message said that a payment had failed and to click <THIS LINK> to make it right.
Yeah, nah... I did the same as Colin, and logged in through the official CBA app. No bounced payments or login difficulties.

Looks like their back again. I was getting these and didn’t let them get past it’s about the accident you had. I asked to speak to the supervisor and they rudely hung up the next one of them that rang I called a thief and as he was about to hang up told me not to be so rude and the silence after the disconnect.
Pointless blocking the number as they use different numbers. I haven’t had one of these for a few months and thought they had been shut down

They dont just come from different numbers, they actually spoof the originating number. We got one via text recently purporting to be from Auspost about a "Problem with your delivery, click here to fix" type of guff from the number we actually do get delivery text messages from Auspost on.
Funny enough we got that on the same day I was listening to the radio and they were talking about people impersonating accountants etc in the same way (Via phone rather than text) and one person rang in to say they got a missed call and voicemail phishing attempt from "You accountant's office" from the phone number of their accountant, while they were actually talking to them on the same number.

Today, I received a suss call on my home fixed line.
Thank goodness for caller ID.
From a loud call centre (on what turned out to be a scrambled number) 01300*********
Thought I'd answer just for the heck of it.
"Hello Mr Allan L
This is NAB Bank checking one of your transactions." (PS I do have an NAB account).
"Did you authorise a transaction of $799.97 today?"
I answer YES.
Long pause at other end... "You did?"
another pause...
"To Mrs Nola Brown in Aukland New Zealand?"
I answer YES, Of Course. Thanks for calling. and hang up. :)
Don't upset them, just play it back at them I say.
Thank them for calling and then hang up.

I ask them for their home phone number, mobile number and email, so I can call them, SMS and spam them after hours.
It has occurred to me to ask them to authenticate - provide a mobile number to which i SMS a code and ask them to read it back. Otherwise I wont play ball.

I tell them I'm on another call and would they mind waiting, then I just put the phone down.

I tried to ring two of the numbers that made those calls to me and both went to an Optus message saying the number had been disconnected. So these people are obviously able to get info on such numbers - possibly from a contact inside Optus. Who knows!!
Peter
An important rule : never click a link in an email or sms unless absolutely certain of authenticity.
I suppose this is a result of our world being globally connected.
ALL our finances and other personal info is available to EVERY malevolent person who has an internet connection. It can only get worse!

I am of the belief that a lot of the scam calls come from information out of a well known carrier's call centre.
My reasoning is that until 2014 I had never received a scam call, before going O/S I had to have hrh's mobile phone unlocked. I rang the carrier's call centre and was guided to their legit website to make a payment. Within a few minutes of hanging up I had a call, "Mr xxxx you have a virus on your computer". They knew my full name, they rang on the number I had used to contact the call centre and most importantly they knew that I had just done a credit card transaction on my PC. They would also have been aware that I was going overseas and likely to mak emore transactions on the PC.
I've also seen comment online that others are of the same belief.
Wow, that's scary Phil.
:mad2:
On a lighter note, that call centre guy probably won "Who wants to be a millionaire?" in India.
