I've been a Vista RC1 beta tester for about 6 months. The experience has, on the whole, been rewarding. I'm usually a Mac user and I reckon that Vista closes the gap between the two major OS's to a far more satisfying extent than XP ever managed. You need a grunty machine with plenty of video ram to get the Aero gui to work. It's very nice if you can afford the performance. My general impressions regarding reliability??? ...well...my machine has been up for 6 months without a crash..... so I'm reasonably impressed. I run quite a few Solaris (Unix) and Linux boxes too, and would expect that of them though.

Should you upgrade from XP? Almost definitely.

I'm holding off for a while as I want to see if my imaging software will be happy under Vista.
There have been a few concerns raised in that area on a few overseas forums, so I might wait and see what the outcome is. No doubt there will be upgrades on the way.

Funny, the company I work for has an application called "Vista" which I created about 3 years ago. It allows us to monitor how the rest of our stuff is operating and change registry settings etc. We had a support call a few weeks ago, so we asked them to start up Vista first. Their answer? "Sorry, we don't have Vista we're running XP":shrug:

Maybe I should rename our applications and use constellations? My predecessor called one of the classes "Cthuluhu"...I am sure some of you guys know the name! Never got into that stuff myself.

Sure. This is why I use Unix-based servers for our business needs. I don't see the average home user doing this though - whatever the threat. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how strong Gates makes Windows - or anyone makes any other operating system - every hacker out there will see it as a challenge. It's an inherent problem that will never be fixed for long or go away.

If you want better security - disallow ANY incoming traffic on your network via your ADSL router's firewall. It may be inconvenient - but there you are.

I have always felt that "hackers" consider anything Microsoft as fair game, and that is where the majority of targets lay as well. However, if you tried to hack into Unix/Linux etc you would be excomunicated!

the more as time goes by, i really suspect that they arent bitter rivals at all, but in collusion. with bill going yeh steve, umm you do the cutting edge thing, and we'll follow and cherry pick the best features, its a win win(doze) situation? I mean i dont think apple is serious about being the main dominant OS (lots of proof of that), there happy with there corporate clients (and ipods/itunes), and dont give that much of a hoot about homeusers really, not as much as they make out to anyway.

Couldnt resist it so Ive been using it one of my machines at home for a couple of days, only problem so far is my sound card no work.
Also theres lots more annoying security check popup warnings about running things, can turn them off I suppose.

Looks pretty groovy, but I could easily live without it.

If you guys are buying new hardware - then get the new O/S in my opinion. XP is on its way out. Everything bar a couple of little applications I ran now run just fine on Vista. Why go with a superceded platform when you will most likely get a Vista-capable box anyway?

ok ill flip the arguement why go with the new os with limited driver support (in my experance anyway) also i have quiet a few programs that refused to work under vista so for the moment ill be running the old workhorse (xp) for a whilst yet maby wait for sp1 or 2 to come out for vista

I'm happy with XP and dont see the benifit of change at the moment.

Same here, XP is doing the job for me, and as is quite common there are always some issues with anything brand new.

LOL! When I'm asked to run my life-support system on Vista - I'll worry about it then. Until that moment I'm very happy with the new O/S experience. At the end of the day - it's just plain fun delving into new features. The only drivers I can't get to work are for my 3 year-old scanner which I can replace for around the $100 mark for one that supports Vista. Not really a biggie I wouldn't have thought. All my cameras, printers and external storage devices run just fine on Vista - and I give it a pretty big tick as to just how comprehensive its native driver base already is.

The old adage applies here: don't run it on mission-critical business-related hardware yet. Plain and simple. For home users - I can't see a problem.

What I should have said I'm not going to pay out a few hundred $ for something I dont need...XP Pro works fine for me ATM and I dont need any new features....its like saying you have a 2 or 3 year old Corolla and just because a new model has been released with a fancy MP3 player you have to buy it...not me.

XP will be supported for many years to come....saying that I will get Vista just not straight away.

You also have a very valid point Striker. The only reason I have it is because it is actually a form of fun for me. I'm not into computer games (never have been) so this is as close as it gets for me.

I suppose it's analogous to people who have a car because it gets them around versus people who love to tinker and like the car for the cars' sake alone.

I'm having a few issues with my laptop running under XP.
It's crashed a fair few times while using the Toucam out in the field.

Now I can't use the "save as" function and the system seems to be accessing the HD all the time, the HD light is constantly flickering.

I'm wondering:

a. Will upgrading to Vista (clean install) fix the system. I'm worried because it's a Compaq and it came with a proprietary disk with XP and other files and I think it's only meant to be re-installed using this disk.

b. Will the Toucam work under Vista ( have you tried it Omaroo?)

I know I can always re-install XP but I was just wondering if Vista's the way to go.
It's got 1 MB RAM and a 3.2GHz Pentium BTW.

I agree that waiting is best, I'm not planning to upgrade my main systems yet, no need, just the laptop.

If you have any interest in sci-fi, you could re-test your interest in games with the original 'Half life' or Star Wars 'Knights of the old republic'. Most games don't interest me but these are two of my favorites. And then you could tell us how they run under Vista :)

Yep - version 3 (beta) works a treat - as does the stable version 2.

Andrew, I run XP on both my laptops and neither has crashed. I use both with the Toucam (modified) and neither give any problems, and the Long Exposure mod uses more pooter power than normal Toucam.

Your problem sounds strange indeed.

Both my Laptops are old & small.

check the amount of free space, or if a defrag is needed.

Yeah I've defraged regularly Chris, and I think at 1GB Ram, my next option is to go up to 2GB but not sure if that's possible or would solve the problem.
It searches the HD even when idol. :rolleyes:
And there's still enough empty space on the HD.

I think it's a registry problem, that's why I'm wondering if installing Vista will fix it and leave all my programs intact.

I would try formatting and reloading a fresh copy of XP first because that laptop is complete over kill just to run a toucam.

2gb ram is better but 1 gig is ample for the apps neeeded to run a toucam.

I have a laptop pentium M 2 gig with 1 gig ram and I can run around 5-10 programs at the same time.

Yep, the lappy is used for business apps, so running the Toucam is a snap for this setup.
It's just handy to take the lappy out in the field.

Somewhere along the way though it's corrupted the system so I will do what you say, just reinstall XP.
I was just hoping that installing Vista over it would somehow fix it.

Like I said I'll be sticking with XP on my other machines, no need to upgrade yet.

From my experiences over the last few days, I would not recommend the upgrade to Vista - it will introduce more problems than it fixes.

Like I've just found out my anti-virus software must be upgraded to the latest version, its TrenMicro Pc-Cillin and you need the 2007 version. Luckily mine is due for renewal this month anyway.
One good bit of news is the new version can be installed on up to 3 PCs at home at no extra cost over 1 machine.

Also there are some free registry scanners and fixers around.
