Hi,

Gday to all !

the kids got a 50mm dept store refractor for xmas, I set it up for them and took one look at the moon, my breath was taken away for a bit....."why did n't I do this long ago? "......

After abit of research and emptying pockets.....( I'm on disability, so money is always a problem and I've got some physical limits moving, esp carrying even viewing), I decided on a Celestron EQ 127 one of the powerseeker range and yesterday ran out and bought one.

I enjoyed myself quite a bit last night, nice big black rings under my eyes and quite satisifed with a first look at things I've always wanted to see but never had the time.

I live on the northern beaches and so light pollution is a big problem esp out to the east. Which begs me to ask about LPC filters. The scope uses 1.25 eyepieces and I understand it is not a pure reflector (short tube) and would like some kind of idea on what optical improvement to expect from using such a filter.:ship2:

Hi Davo and welcome to IIS :hi:
On occasions I use a Astronomiks CLS filter which essentiall filters out the wavelengths of streetlights and other manmade sources of LP and enhances the views of nebulas and such like.
I am still not up on the technical side of things as some of the other members are but viewing wise I am very happy with it.

I know nothing about Light Pollution filters, sorry. I am fortunate to not have light pollution.

I used to belong to a Davo club ie only Dave's, Davo's etc could join and of course it was a evening social club ....bad news...

Well so far had the scope for 4 days and only one night of clear skies, after weeks of mainly clear skies......:eyepop:

The LP filter seems a must and it's in the budget for next month. Until then I'm going to have to man pack the scope and mount into a darker location. I'm going to have to make a carrying frame of something which is another project spawning into life.

Welcome Davo, seeing that I have a measurable period of time longer than you as a member...er...actually 5 days, that makes me only a half a rung higher on the forum evolutionary ladder than you. :P

However, I have been on other forums in other industries for decades and the old 80/20 rule is a standard i.e. 20% active members, 80% lurkers, yet I sense this one is far different. This forum is very active, very friendly, and manages a mix of serious astronomy in a down to Earth friendly atmosphere.

I have learned more in one week reading old postings than I ever imagined I would. I have bookmarked dozens of websites for future reading, I have discovered a myriad of helpful resources, that will take me a good while to fully utilize, however the point is, it's all out there, and it all starts from IIS. :thumbsup:
