Does anyone know the thread size of the bolt that the head unit screws onto? I am not talking about the bolt you put the camera on, but the bolt at the top of the tripod legs that the tripod head attaches to. I don't know the model number of my tripod off hand because I am at work. I am hoping the bolt is standard across all Manfrotto tripods.

cheers,
Andrew

Hi Andrew

These are usually 3/8 inch, compared to the 1/4 inch Whitworth which you mentioned for connecting the camera to the mounting plate.

Photo Continental stock a range of Manfrotto accessories if you need stuff, although I suspect you are having a go at a DIY project to fit your tracker to the tripod?

Cheers

Just did a quick bit of homework and it probably wouldn't matter using whitworth or UNC because they are both the same diameter and pitch, just slightly different thread shape and angle. I'd find it a bit strange if they were actually made with a Whitworth thread beacause it is rare to use whitworth these days and the international standard for the mounting hole in the camera is 1/4 UNC. Having both UNC and Whitworth in the same system would be a bit silly I reckon.
It should be all metric anyway ;)
I use a 3/8 UNC bolt to secure my Manfrotto ball head no probs

Wow, I forgot I had posted this question. I just remembered about it now. Thanks for the replies guys, and yes Dennis you are correct, it is for fitting a DIY tracker to my tripod. ;)
