As RB said in his thread the other day, I met up with him on Friday night (26th) to image the comet.. It was a very difficult target due to local light pollution and the waxing gibbous moon in the North.

2 of these images are made of 2 exposures combined - 1 for the foreground and 1 for the comet.

Canon 350D + Sigma 17-70mm lens on fixed tripod. Exposures ranging from 45-60 seconds @ ISO100.

We had lots of drunken locals draped in Aussie flags wandering past while we were imaging.. was funny :) One car load stopped and asked if we knew where the fireworks were!? :)

Thanks

Lovely photos, Mike. Really a delight for the eyes.

Is that the sun setting in the first shot to the left? Or a light? I'm not sure.

If it is the sun, then the comet has moved a long way north overnight (and the tail forgot to swing away from the sun! :D Is it your composite shot, or am I missing something?)

They turned out great Mike !
It really was difficult to image in the light pollution of the city.
Not to mention all the people going past wondering what we were doing.

To bad we couldn't get the fireworks and the comet in the same FOV.

Oh BTW: I really like the second and third one Mike.

Thanks guys.

Eric, that's a nasty sodium light, not the sun. And yes, that's one of the composites - I took two images, one for the wharf and one for the comet and combined them in Photoshop.

btw in the third shot, I think I can almost see Rod's house ;) but I think I cropped it off the right hand side.

I love the 3rd image, of the comet over Brisbane Water.

I was up at Staples Lookout at Kariong with Andrew (Hector) when the place was invaded by 50,000 odd firework fans. I said "There's only one roman candle in the sky at the moment, folks." They didn't get it....
