Supernova Remnant RCW114

I first noticed this one when doing a Ha widefield lens image of the Milky Way and noticed this heart shaped nebula which is almost never imaged.

Here is a widefield image of part of it. It probably needs a mosaic or a wide lens to catch it all - around 150mm.

Hi Greg,

Looks very nice. Perhaps crop the left to balance the composition? Not that I'm an expert in aesthetics. Perhaps a question for Andy?

The left side? Did you mean the right side? I felt the dark dust patches formed an item of interest on the left. The right is largely open space.

It just looks unbalanced to me and if it were my image I'd probably rotate it or snip off some of the dark area on the left. But feel free to ignore me. I have all the artistic sensibilities of a computer geek :)

Superbly done! I know how faint and difficult these can be.

Perhaps the left-right ambiguity is because the thumbnail and the original are oriented differently.

They're also processed very differently. I prefer the look of the thumbnail, which is more saturated and contrasty, making it easier to see the snr.

Great wide field Greg, I'm hoping to be able to image this part myself in Ha if the clouds every part down here in Melbourne!

I do prefer the processing of the thumbnail version too.

Its a large nebula so it will take a widefield of view. I'd estimate a 200mm focal length with a full frame camera would take it in.

I did this with the Proline 16803 and a 165mm lens:

Love this Greg. Yes I would crop out the darker bits to the right and send the Super Death star over to nuke that very bright star on the lower right.

When imaging this one earlier in the year, I noticed just how dim it was, and how much and for how long my modest gear would be pushed to get a result :sadeyes:

Your take is interesting though in that the surrounding stars really show just how dim the feint threads of HA are by comparison. :eyepop:

It's a HUGE region to cover, and not easy to balance individual sections.

Great so see it getting some more attention, I wonder if you were to reduce the stars a bit if the Ha would be a bit more prominent? :question:

Yes worth a try. I'll check it out.

I did also get several panels of this with the Honders last year. Not processed though. I am not sure I got all 4 panels but only 3.
Its easiest to image with a lens though, something around 100mm on a full frame sensor as a guide.
