A quick M16

Hi all,

Taking advantage of cooler and clearer winter nights I was able to collect about 23 hours in Ha, OIII and SII during the last week.

I have decided to again experiment with a Riccardi reducer, so the data is from a combination of f/6 and f/4.5 from the same 105mm refractor. I also decided against using any noise reduction on this image.

You've managed to pull together a few different images for this Suavi to produce a fine result. Nice star resolution and plenty of fine detail in the nebula.

Tell us about the mapping. Is it OHS ==> RGB ? The blue is very strong.

It is a very unusual image. What were your goals?

The handling of the faint and dusty tracts around the Eagle's beak and further left is very well done. You certainly didn't need to do any noise reduction: it is very smooth and deep.

I admit I have a tendency to go overboard with colours, but I promise that the Luminance has been hardly manipulated. Colour mapping was S (boosted x5), H and O (boosted x3), but later I manipulated the colours with curves and histogram. My better half pressed me for a different to my usual colour palette hence the blue.

Another highly detailed image which surprises coming from modest aperture. I like it although the colour is a bit too all blue.

Coincidentally, I'm currently gathering data on M16 in Nb with my RC8 now that it's finally collimated :D.
Not sure what my colour palatte will be this time, but it won't be green & gold (https://www.astrobin.com/186483/B/) that's for sure!

Could be my monitor Suavi....what do you see when you look at both side by side ?were both subjected to the same contrast work?was the blending exactly the same on both images?was any selective work done on one and not the other? could just be the calibration on the monitor I'm viewing on in my obs but, somehow I don't think so.

I think I increased overall brightness a bit and that might have decreased contrast. I always welcome any criticism from our friendly community because it has helped me greatly in my slow but enjoyable astro journey :)

Been a while since I did anything close to 12+ hours of integration on a single object :lol:

It is a different and interesting colour palette, not my favourite but it is your artistic flair ;)

I am curious as to how much detail you can extract from your data. Your image scale is pretty much identical to my recent reprocess (https://www.astrobin.com/full/354286/0/) which I’ve drizzled but natively we’ve got the same image scale.

It is clear that your attempt at the Eagle is heaps sharper than mine Colin.

The reason is probably a combination of the following:

1. 130mm aperture vs 105mm aperture. Even at the same resolution in terms of arcseconds per pixel, larger aperture should be able to resolve more detail).
2. Seeing (my location - coastal in the tropics, is unlikely to have better seeing).
3. Skills of the person processing the data :thumbsup:

However, colours are way more pleasing in my attempt ;) and longer integration seems to have allowed me to go deeper.

My drizzled Ha has a FWHM of a little over 4 or 2.25” which is still well within the resolving power of your very nice and sharp 4” ;) Sounds like seeing conditions is probably the limiting factor.

Given the integration time, the death and smoothness of yours is fantastic! I had to hit mine with pretty much every noise reduction technique that PI offers haha

It is the deconvolution and drizzling that brings the detail and given the smoothness and quality of the data in your image I was wondering how much you could extract from it :)

Thanks Colin - I may one day drizzle this data, but that other word you have mentioned starting also with a D is something that is totally forbidden in our house and I would never ever do this horrible D thing to the stars in my images! :lol:

So you mean you'll never have a certain M seeing worms in your images ;)
I've found the best way to bring out detail is to be really naughty with my laptop and be completely unprotected when I am Ding. Most people don't D more than 25 times but I don't believe the fun begins until you start Ding 100 times :lol:
