Lucky Friday the 13th

Well this was really lucky imaging because I took the footage between passing clouds and to be honest, I didn't think the seeing was all that good. I was surprised I managed this much detail but thickening cloud prevented me from trying Saturn and Mars. By 11.00 pm it was completely overcast so I packed my gear away. Maybe tomorrow night will be better. The weather in Melbourne has been dismal for astrophotography for the last few weeks so I am itching to get out there again!

Equipment used for this shot was my usual combination of 8 inch f5 Newtonian and Canon 550d.

Excuse this ignorant comment from someone who has never tried planetary imaging - but I thought you'd need a longer focal length or smaller pixels for something like this.

That's right Jon, even up your way has been pretty ordinary. If it rained from the cloud cover at least there would be some benefit but just blocking our view, well that's just not on!!


Nice to see you picked that up, it was just lucky timing, I only noticed it when focusing the image.


Thanks Chris. Now we don't want to start any Melbourne/Sydney rivalry here but I wish I was in Sydney to take advantage of the good conditions, we'll get our turn! You're right about the focal length, no prime focus stuff to produce this enlargement. It included a 2.5X Power mate and 12.5mm eyepiece.
