After a short hiatus travelling and a Full Moon...I was hanging to capture this beauty because my FOV with the FLI 16803 and FSQ combo frames it perfectly and now is the perfect time of year to image it over an entire night.

This is the other Horsehead Nebula in the sky but it gets imaged much less than its more famous cousin in Orion, partly because it is big (need at least a 4deg X 4deg FOV to fit it all in properly) and partly because it is faint.

This is a straight LRGB taken over two nights in mostly good conditions and no Moon, all image capture details are under the image at the link below

Very nicely done. Quite a challenge to process to that depth I'd imagine. The blues came up a treat. One for the cool wall.

Nice one Mike. Never tried this one myself in fact I barely new it existed until occasional images of it started popping up. Yours is one of the best I've seen.

Hi Mike,
Congratulations!!
That is the best blue horse I have ever seen, a winner by many lengths!
Yours is way deeper showing more of the background dusty stuff than Rogelio's
https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap090521.html

I thought Rogelio had a good horse until I saw yours!!

Wow!!
Makes me want to process the mosaic data I have of the blue horse sitting on my hard drive somewhere....Hmmmmm!!
Cheers,
Tim

Fantastic Mike!! Definitely the best I’ve seen of this region. Has me wanting to image this with a 135mm to get the FOV but there is no competing with 106mm of aperture there.

WOW!!! That is spectacular! You can even see how far the light from the brightest star goes in to the dust, the faintest dust is illuminated!!!

You must live in a Canberra in an alternate universe Mike - can't remember a clear night in 14 days now

It's a nice image!

Yeah go for it Col...what about a mozaic with the 8" F3

Cheers Logan, yes the influence of Nu Scorpii is rather far reaching huh?

Thanks Lewis and hey, just gotta grab what ya can. I got two clear nights in a row out at Wallaroo for this one ..unfortunately it was cloudy during the day between nights and my batteries didn't get much charge, so I was cut a little short on the second night when my batteries got a bit too low and to avoid shortening their life I cut the session a little short, could have perhaps grabbed 1 or 2 more hrs of Lum had that not occurred

Thanks Bart :)

Nice detail, colour, depth etc etc, just what we’d expect from you. However, I think the orientation could be better. It looks more like a dog howling at the moon than a horse. I think you could make a better look by rotating 90deg counterclockwise, so the head points down in the usual horsie fashion.

Mike was this image native FL, or did you use the reducer?

If reducer, which one? (there are 3 reducers for the FSQ 106ED family - I have the QE0.73 for my EDXIII)

strongmanmike

Cheers Mark

Thanks Geoff  and yes I did try rotating it, for the reason you say...but for me the stallion lifting his head up did it for me and seemed more dramatic :)

No reducer used, it was taken at the native F5 which gives me a 4deg X 4deg FOV.

I would indeed like a reducer but the one to suit my big 52mm diagonal 16803 chip would be the 645 reducer... which is around AU$3000 :eyepop: :help:...not sure it would be really worth it ...but would be nice to have of course

Mike

gregbradley
18-06-2018, 06:38 AM
No you should be able to use the cheaper reducer and it works fine with a Proline 16803:

http://www.pbase.com/gregbradley/image/124761790/large

Whether or not you want to image at around 330mm though is another question. I'd say it has limited usefulness.

Greg.

I know this guy in Canberra that is probably selling his QE0.73 reducer with the step-in adaptor

strongmanmike
18-06-2018, 11:00 AM
Hmm?...I was lead to believe that only the 645 would cover the 52mm circle properly (of course and then some), I was sure the other only covered 42mm..?

LewisM
18-06-2018, 01:33 PM
You can try before you buy

strongmanmike
18-06-2018, 02:42 PM
:)...what and disrupt my currently flawlessly operating system, rebalance, new flats etc :eyepop: :rundog:

I'm scared of change, re balancing, new flats etc :scared2:...maybe I need another FSQ and PL16803, to use with the reducer, mounted along side the current one..so I can just switch between all three rigs  would that cost much

Tak may be conservative with their numbers unlike many manufacturers who no doubt exaggerate.

Yeah probably....might wait and as you say, not sure the slightly wider field is all that useful anyway..
