Hey all,

I've been trying to image this for years but without much luck. I've finally captured some data I'm happy with. This was a super difficult process for me, I must have started over at least 10 times, but I think I got a decent result from the data I was working with.

The original plan was to create a mosaic which included the dust lanes but I wasn't able to colour match the frames well and so that idea was scrapped. I'll hopefully have another go at combining them soon. Has anyone had any experience in stitching OSC DSLR mosaics together in Pixinsight?

Shot details:
Nikon D610
Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 ED AI-s
19*90" @ ISO2000 f/4
Skywatcher Star Adventurer Mount
Images calibrated and stacked in DeepSkyStacker, processing done in Pixinsight, and some minor colour changes/final cropping done in Photoshop.

It's come up really nicely :)

I've stitched a number of mosaics using both a D7200 and D810 in PixInsight and I've found the best way to do it is using the MosaicByCoordinates script first, this does require you to use the ImageSolver script first so that you can add the coordinates to the images first. MosaicByCoordinates will create new images that get fed into another script.

Then you use the GradientMergeMosaic script on the new images. I've found this works quite well myself.

Thanks Peter!

Thanks Colin, I'll have to give this a go tomorrow night. Should I be cropping and running a DBE on each image before going through this?

Oh Nathan how I wish I could produce an image like yours.
I love it.
I have been working on that region the last week as cloud permitted and so it is most uplifting to actually see what I need to work towards.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful effort.

Lovely image, Nathan!

Definitely crop off any edges that aren't clean. If you have gradients and can remove them carefully then DBE won't hurt. It's easy to try with and without to see what works better.

Cheers,
Rick.
