Morning JB!

We are still confirming details for our speakers for the two Saturdays. We are also hoping that Rick will be able to do a PixInsight spot on the second Friday if he is able to join us this year.

This begs the question if there are any of our IIS attendees who might be able to do a workshop or give a talk during their visit? So hands up please for those of you who would like to volunteer to enlighten us.

Diane :-)

The manual registration form is loaded and the online registration system is all ready for registrations. All I have to do is turn it on. :)

I wonder if I can wait until 8pm tomorrow night? ;)

Either way, the early bird will no doubt come out on top for the annual first to register competition!

This might help - it is from the registration book a couple of years ago but I suspect the setup will be similar. You want the very last page which has the map on it. Page 10 also has some info.

Hi Glen

It has been some 10-12 years since I last attended, but for what its worth, this was the set up back in 2006.

The red rectangle is where caravans were parked on the upper paddock, adjacent the main entrance.

The red oval is where caravans were parked on the lower paddock, adjacent the tennis courts. A steep embankment separates the two paddocks=walk up and down a lot for facilities, etc.:)

Glen,
The caravan spaces are gradually getting more and more curtailed as Lions put in new equipment for the kids - the latest thing which may be there by August is a Gaga Pit, location on the site unknown. The upper caravan space is next to the Visual observing area, but nowhere is far from anywhere else. It will have to be first come first pick of available spaces. When it runs out, people will have to go to the lower area. I'm attaching the most recent plan of the place from last year.

Two Lower Camping Ground photos from 2017. Fewer campers last year. Tents and camper vans fit well between the trees. Sometimes get 6 / 7 tent set-ups. Caravans go on the other side of the Tennis court.

And the misty morning photo from 2015.

Hi Alan,

THIS is a Gaga Pit. And this is what it seems to be about.
"Gaga is a fast paced, high energy sport played in an octagonal pit. The more players the better! Dubbed a kinder gentler version of dodge ball, the game is played with a soft foam ball, and combines the skills of dodging, striking, running, and jumping, while trying to hit opponents with a ball below the knees."

While I appreciate all the effort to make AF camper/van friendly and understand the spirit for first come etc, the uncertainty about the caravan capability makes this quite a stressful dilemma...it’s tough to justify dragging the van up there without knowing there’s a suitable spot for it.

A couple of nights in my pop-up tent might be my limit this year

QLD_Astrofest

Hi Duncan,

We have recently received confirmation that the Gaga Pit will not be installed until September, so it will not impact on this years Astrofest. Lions are complying to the Sommerset Regional Council's regulation on caravans, and so positions are defined by that, and not how the Queensland Astrofest did it in the past. We hope to learn soon the exact position of the future Gaga Pit so as to plan for next year.

Having said that, we have also just been made aware that the land-owner next door is allowing camping and small camper-vans along the fence, but NOT caravans. We are opening negotiations as to see if this is a safe and viable option for us as this could relieve some of the pressure on camping.

I am not fully aware of the level of demand for caravan space this year, so the best bet would be to contact Wendy at registrar_AT_qldastrofest.org.au, outline your projected stay if you would like to be there for most of the camp. Spots will be allocated as people register and requests for preferred positions will be supported as much as possible. We would appreciate as much notice as possible if your plans change so we can maximise the use of these spots.

Hopefully this will help you decide, as we look forward seeing to all our regular and new attendees at the 25th year of the Queensland Astrofest.

Just need to sort out how I monitor my imaging gear from the warmth of my camper.

OneCosmos

*All sorted* thanks David

Not too far off now. I have had some of the most amazing and rewarding views of Jupiter, Saturn and Mars lately using the 152mm refractor, Denk binos, 12.5mm dockters and a planetary filter - simply unbelievable. I'm really keen to show people at Astrofest how good these views are, (athough I suspect Nundah's seeing is a lot better than Duckadang), but I need a kindly astronomer to help out. How?

Well I'll certainly have both the refractor and the SDM present but I'll be mostly imaging through the refractor partly because the vestigial EQ8 pier precludes enjoyable viewing being so low to the ground. If on a few nights I could transfer it to a much taller platform I can use it for visual too - mainly for the planets as the SDM obviously blows it away for DSOs.

I had planned to buy a Berlebach Planet that could double for visual and imaging but it is just too much money. What I'm looking for therefore is someone who has something of at least an EQ6 capacity on a tall tripod doing nothing much that could accept a Losmandy style bar. I reckon for visual the EQ6 or similar would perform well enough and provide more comfortable viewing.

Cheers,

Chris

Just wondering how folks find the meals provided by the Camp? My camper is self contained as far as a kitchen is concerned, and I can bring what I need to prepare food wise for the duration; but cooking does take some time, gas, etc, and then there is cleanup. Breakfast and Lunch are pretty easy, but going out for dinner does have some appeal. So how do you find the meals provided by the Camp?

OneCosmos
26-06-2018, 02:11 PM
I always found the meals to be perfectly adequate (there was one year where it wasn't - but one in 9 isn't bad) and it kind of made astronomy easy by taking away some of the onerous tasks. Having said that it is no longer as affordable as it once was and last year I simply pack a whole bunch of 'lite 'n easy' meals to microwave. It worked pretty well and I will do the same again this year.

Hi Glen,

Meals have varied over the years. They used to be $6 and very easy and mostly filling, but they have certainly become a lot more expensive - but hardly surprising as costs have risen. Belinda does a great job but I have to say I didn't eat 'out' at all last year as I also have my van with a microwave and 'lite 'n' easy' was in the picture, punctuated by plenty of wine, port and cheese :).

The meals at Astrofest are certainly convenient, for the most part tasty enough and sustaining, but I'll be bringing lite n easy again.

Like Jonathan's my 16", which originally belonged to Jack Giles, was designed and built from the ground up with imaging in mind. The poles are shorter than normal which pushes the focus further out to allow for filter wheels and cameras. I will be imaging with the refractor though whilst thoroughly enjoying using my eyes with the 16"

The more I think about it is that I'll need FL more than aperture. Might pack up the Mewlon 210 in the boot if I have room. But that Mars weather makes it challenging to get anything on the surface.

Hi everyone,

We have realised that we haven't been promoting the Erwin van der Velden Memorial Photo Competition very well. Many people knew Erwin, either when he was a member of the Brisbane Astronomical Society and the Southern Astronomical Society, while he worked at York Optical in Brisbane, or by his fabulous images, but we also realise that many do not. There is a blurb about him and a link to a website devoted to him here http://qldastrofest.org.au/index.php/activities/77-astro-photo-competition-rules.

The Astrofest is fast approaching and if you haven't gotten your images you wish to enter to the Photo Competition to the club representatives on the Astrofest committee, or to the registrar, you will need top act soon as we will be in the throes of setting up camp from mid next week.

With this in mind, and as we want to have the images up when the camp starts on Friday, please send a PM to here, and we will give you an email address you can send digital images for a multimedia display. If we can have the electronic versions this weekend, we can relax the rule to have the physical photo prior to camp.

Bear in mind that our display device is not likely calibrated to the specifications you have at home, therefore your image may not look quite how you intended. This is one reason we have not used this method to display competition photos in the past, however we feel we man need to drag ourselves into the late 20th Century.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Personally I prefer to have the images on paper as they will be how you want them to look, but you can't have everything... I mean... Where would you put it?

I hear you about the difficulty of having a photo quality printer. Ours is not supported under W10, and having a difficult time finding another that prints CMYK rather than RGB.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick word about our Major Sponsors. We have been lucky over the years to have had the great support for people such as Bintel and SkyWatcher. This year is no different, Bintel (https://www.bintel.com.au/) is an authorised distributor of ZWO and has donated a great prize in our raffle. Likewise Will from SkyWatcher (https://skywatcheraustralia.com.au/) is supporting us with a bunch of great products. Simulation Curriculum (https://www.simulationcurriculum.com/), makers of Starry Night and Sky Safari, have decided to come on board as Major Sponsor this year as well. Finally, ExtraVision (http://www.extravision.com.au/) has given us a number of prizes. On the downside, our raffle is going to take as long as it does every year, but on the plus, there are lots of great prizes and we will be drawing the prizes at lunch so we don't lose the night, should it be clear.

The raffle is open to all registrants, organising Club members, their families and friends. It is an important part of our running of the Astrofest, allowing us to buy and update equipment, and to defray as much from the fees as we can. We can't sell the tickets online, but if you are a registrant and wish to buy tickets for your friends and family, contact the Registrar at registrar(at)qldastrofest.org.au. Of course, tickets will be on sale at the Queensland Astrofest up to the drawing on Saturday 11th August.Have a look at all our sponsors contributions on our website (http://www.qldastrofest.org.au).

If you use social media, I would like to ask that you share our Major Sponsors' websites and social media pages so they can get as much exposure as possible. Their support is vital for the Queensland Astrofest, and The Queensland Astrofest would like to return that support.

Cheers for now.

If someone wants to complicate my life to the extreme, please send any images for the Erwin van der Velden Trophy by tomorrow afternoon. Your images will miss the starting gun by a day or so, but I will be able to update the presentation by Saturday.

Terrific Astrofest this year, one for the books I reckon. Had 7 clear nights out of 8 and no fog so mostly allnighters. Stacks of data and photons were collected, beer, wine and cheese reserves were quickly depleted and all this good times turned into some extra kilograms. Now back on my bike. :) Great to catch up with everybody. Had a ball.

I had a super astrofest (did you see what I did there, Peter and Troy?) Great to see you Marc, and all the other IIS denizens. I managed to lose weight despite the beer, wine and cheese :) Now the processing begins!

Cheers,
Rick.

Agreed. Think the best I’ve been to - clear nights, fog only one night at 4pm.

Thanks to the committee and Belinda and Tracey of course.

Agreed - best Astrofest in a long time. Weather was near perfect. Belinda did an awesome job looking after us again.

Thanks for the great event! Averaged 3 hours of sleep per night. I am completely exhausted....

One of the most enjoyable I have been to. Thanks Belinda for making the digital piano possible which provided me with a distraction during the long light tea time of the soul :)

Have to agree with all the previous comments. I was seriously considering giving the Astrofest a miss when Anne-Louise was sick just days prior.

Casa de Surma-Hawes performed spectacularly all week (as those around us can attest to our snoring), nights were splendid, and the company... meh... 2 outta three ain't bad, right?

After packing up the Astrofest with the rest of the Committee, it was too late to pack our not so movable feast and not arrive untill late in the evening, we decided to remain one more night. After coming out of the quarters Sunday night I saw this, and called all and sundry.

I'm afraid that you have to do FacePlant to see most of the traffic in this regard I believe.

We miss you and HRH up here, BTW

This why my wife doesn't want me to walk next to her in the shopping mall. I don't get it. Fashion is built-in. Made in France after all?

It's not because the Indian Mynas dive bomb you when they see you in the car park, Marc?

Who was that good looking bloke next to Troy?

My wife hates socks with sandals with a passion....I occasionally just put them on just for the reaction ..one time in spring here in Canberra it was warm in the afternoon but cooled right down during the night so I started off with sandals in the arvo but took shoes and socks with me to put on later...problem is I forgot the shoes and only took the socks...had to take a photo just like yours to send her...she reckoned I did it on purpose because I am just a daggy astronomer

Actually I was at Astrofest in 2015 during a visit to Australia. A very memorable trip and i would like to visit again.

MichaelSW

It was easy, Troy. The joys of the 'early' morning Astrofest routines:- watching Taurus, Orion and Canis Major rise above the ridge line; checking signs of the Possum Raiders; writing the overnight minimum temperature in the tabletop frost; vegemite on toast as the sun rises; sitting in the sun to enjoy brekkie and saying "G'day" to the morning walkers; mist on the Brisbane River; hot shower in Bayley House block; watching the magpie gang chase each other around the sky; feeling Snug as a Rug in a Bug in my beanie and warm clothes.

And of course, an afternoon sleep doesn't go astray.

Cheers.

IIS connections. 2015 was the year I organised a tent for Joe but forgot my own! He gave a great informative talk on the History, telescopes and Programmes at the McDonald Observatory near Fort Davis, Texas where the works as a science educator.

After that event I am sure that you put "Tent" at the top of your checklist!
