Hi everyone,

My first image with this scope and camera.This photo was taken over two nights (April 21/22, 2018) Image taken 2 hours NE from Melbourne under very dark skies.

7 hours exposure of NGC5128 with a 9.5" f/7 CDK telescope, AP900 mount and ASI1600mm camera. 4 hours Luminance with 3 min exposures; 1 hours each in RGB 5 min each; Gain set to 75. Darks, Flats and Bias frames applied.

An excellent image. You've got superb detail in the tiniest dust wisps, for example the tiny Superman "S" just below centre.

Hi John,
you've gone deep enough to pick up the enormous halo of this galaxy.
I would have tried to get a little more colour out of the stars
& the galaxy perhaps using LAB mode.

Mike, the image link shows he took it at Terip Terip, one of our ASV astro buddies bought a nice place about an hour south of us.

Terip Terip, love the names in our parts. We live near Moglonemby Rd, i still cant pronounce it easily.

Ah I see, nice and dark there! I like how the land in your area is so neatly divided into perfect large squares bound by long rows of trees...was this done by aliens..? :help:

Thanks for the very kind words everyone especially some of the very well regarded and long established Deep Space images on ISS such as StrongmanMike, Ray, Greg, Marc, Allan, Rick Mike & Trish and others.

Still very early in the Deep Space imaging journey especially with a new imaging setup and evolving from Planetary.

Great first light image with new scope and camera. Congratulations.

Went searching for the 9" CDK and could not find it. Can you please post a link to the scope.

Also curious about your gain settings for ZWO 1600. In particular your reason for the 75 gain setting.

Thanks Rob,

The scope in fact is a totally refurbished/rebuilt Orion ODK 10. The scope had both the main and secondaries re-ground, re-polished and re-aluminised achieving a Strehl Ratio of 0.935 by inferogram.

The scope has a number of other improvements like a felt lined tube, improved focuser and improved secondary.

All Orion ODK scopes have a 0.25" stop around the outer edge of the primary. So they are in fact a 9.5" f/7 optical system rather than what Orion UK advertise.

It's got great promise and it's very far from from the original!

Stefan who re-built the scope seems to have done an amazing job.

In terms of the camera settings, I just looked at other people's images and gave 75 a go as it appears to be used a lot by other. I am also keen to try 135.
