I picked up my new scope today. Partly clear and windy, then turned to a thunderstorm, celestron orange - I have my stamp of approval:rofl:

my son partly drove getting some valuable driving instruction and practice on his L's:help:

i installed my microfocus motor asap - then the storm hit after Alan called around

i intend to take advantage of every single dark sky night as SPSP and Queensland astrofest, and with an addition of a light pollution filter maybe some stuff from the doghouse

I think it was a combination of Houghy's and Rodstar's big beasties.

Mind you, Central Coast didn't get much more than a gale, in the end.

Purchasing astro equipment over the new moon period... people that do this should be banned!!

I did notice the Celestron sky last evening but the psychadelic orange cloud cleared away later. Hope you had a change to enjoy first light with the RASA. Will it be going to Qld Astrofest or SPSP?

Congratulations on your new scope David and I am most impressed with the Bunnings case.
I get so much of my astro applied gear from Bunnings☺.
We need a section in the photography section for clouds...probably get more contributions there than the rest combined☺.

well its still blowing a bit of a breeze and there is still some cloud about. but and a big but (i may call the scope WOMBAT for being squat with a fat arse digging for starlight)

Wombat is mounted in the doghouse. i have a lot to learn:)

LewisM

You even put the scope upside down in typical Down Under style

You REALLY need a Starlight Xpress camera for that profile, or a ZWO.

15-04-2018, 08:25 PM
one day i will have a real camera - one that takes photons:rofl:

i am happy to use the 450D for the minute but i need to explore what options there are to make the most of real estate and the need, the need for speed;)

for SPSP i will be on a battery, but for Astrofest it will be different, so could run a amp sucking cooled megacamera. one shot is the way i will stay for the minute

I have already been blamed for our sudden weather change here after my very recent order. Good luck with the scope Dave. I like others think once you get a smaller profile camera you will be happy as can be.

might have to look at an asi 1600:question:

h0ughy
16-04-2018, 07:52 PM
what about this

Paul Haese
16-04-2018, 08:25 PM
Dave the 1600 is about 1.27" per pixel but has 1.2e read noise. The 71 on the other hand is about 1.6" per pixel and has 2.3e read noise. I still think the 1600 is good. Either is probably a nice camera.

Here is an interesting read. A Celestron white paper on the RASA. It deals with concept, design, use, cameras, stuff and some of the things discussed here. Reading it I found the answer to something I was curious about - the size of the central obstruction /obscuration. (114mm in diameter)

thanks Paul, was looking at real estate but i can see your point but its only 12bit where the other is 14bit. arrggg this is where it gets hard what do you trade off? the other is well depth, the 1600 is 20k where the other one is 48.6k
