New "kid" on the block

Hi my first post and first real experience with astronomy, saw McNaught yesterday using Konuspot 50, originally purchased as a spotting scope for sea searches when member of local Volunteer Marine Rescue. Is this going to be suitable for general viewing?

Welcome to IIS Richard.

For a start your scope will be OK and will definitely help you to learn your way around the sky BUT eventually you will need to purchase an astronomical telescope if you continue with the hobby. I worked with a pair of 7x50 binos for years before getting a scope so the spotting scope is a great start.

Anything you can hold up to your eye and look through is going to be a help, but as Rob says sooner or later you will want to go big time :lol:

If it has a clear image then it should be OK for some widefield and Lunar work, but as the others say aperture beckons, the bigger the better.

You'll probably find that while the moon and planets are fine with it because they are bright, once you move onto the fainter deep sky objects they are going to look rather dim because of the extra glass prisms in the spotting scope (to give you an erect image for day use) compared to an astronomical telescope which hopefully minimises the amount of light lost. Also 50mm is a pretty small aperture - I guess it depends how serious you want to get!
