Well that’s interesting, indeed. 80mm f/5 and 6megapickles isn’t bad, and total integration.

If there was a solar eclipse looming soon I’d buy one immediately.

However... the same “advantages” also present an Achilles heel - it’s not upgradeable. So it will become obsolete fairly quickly, particularly the sensor.

Fully integrated devices usually suffer from the problem of being unable to evolve. Stellina is different. The battery can be changed

I think I get what they are trying to do and if it worked like our imagination hopes it will ...would be good.
I could see and imagine having one to entertain guests at a bar be que...
Mmmm needs to be robotic so it can come out when called ... no set up... and put itself away.
But I am thinking heck if its on wheels lets go 16 inch and a decent camera and a big screen....
I guess someone out there has one.
Not an observatory but a robot set up..going to a dark site...get in the car Mr R. and the robot scope runs up the ramp and secures itself for travel and goes on to check the weather and suggest targets to image.

I notice they’re not showing any images full-size from this thing - and I’d want to see some before shelling out $3k. The scope is only an ED doublet and at f/5 that leaves me a bit dubious about image quality.

But as for the idea... i was thinking more solar eclipses. It’s pretty difficult to get an 80mm f/5 setup with a GOTO mount and battery and camera in a 7kg package that could travel by air.

Only snag is that by the time of the next decent solar eclipse worth travelling to this will be well and truly obsolete.

They should at least have used a commercial astro camera module that could be swapped later.

It might even be a total scam.

Think about it, all self contained, including target location, guiding, image acquisition and processing. Just press the button and "hey presto" you have an image of M42 to show your friends.

With the price of storage and the available public data, you could fake it.

Interestingly, looking at the publicity images of those wonderful people on the balcony, they are already hoeing into their second bottle of white and are driving a telescope. in my book, I think that makes them my kind of people.

Great concept. Not sure about the green M3 though.

The profile is quite broad. That could pose a problem in a facing breeze of any strength. 7kg isn't a lot of weight, on such a broad toy.

Totally. It's a magic box - even sees right through your hand, cunningly placed over the objective to prove/disprove such a theory.

Sadly, we know there's a proportion of people who'd pay, and take it's outputs with zero skepticism.

Seriously though, it is a neat idea, bringing the experience to those who don't wish to grind through the finer points/process. What would the equivalent "off the shelf" purchase be?

I'd find it more attractive if it was weatherproof whilst retracted, and had an ethernet port for routable connection. Moot point however, as this product costs more than the market value of both my cars combined.

At that price level, I'd expect a dew shield....OTOH, the thing is probably its own dew heater so 80mm is plenty as it will be limited by its own seeing most times.
