I plan to be there. It will be my first time and I am looking forward to it. The ferry is booked from Tassie.
I am also planning to attend the VicSouth Star Party at Nhill the weekend before. Excellent timing to make the ferry trip worthwhile.
Woohoo welcome Steve 🤗 I love stirring up the noobies hehehehe 😈 I'm going to the Nhill camp too this year 👽👽 Yayyy see you then 😜😜

As a total beginner, is there a calendar for this type of event.
Its certainly something i'd be interested in, but think i should get a handle on the basics 1st.
Oh and a telescope might help.
pfitzgerald
22-06-2018, 08:06 AM
Welcome to the forum Drew
You don't need a telescope to go, there will be a number of scopes set up that you will be able to look through. As a beginner, going to an astro camp like SVAC and talking with the folk there will help get you started on your own astro journey - and shorten the time needed 'to get a handle on the basics' as you put it.
For the cost of the weekend it is a really cheap investment in your own personal development as an amateur astronomer.

Drew
Let me backup Pauls comment, camps are one of the best ways to learn about what scope options are out there or to use your gear better. I haven't looked back once I started joining in
Hope you are able to come along!!

Thanks Paul and Malcolm,
I was hoping that was the case.
This far out I can be sure to make plans.
I will eagerly awat the booking sheets etc.
(My condolences Malcom)
Don't listen to them Drew, it's a trap 😜😜 the first time I turned up there I turned up with one blankly 😱 no cameras, laptops or anything but a teeny tiny scope that I didn't even know how to use.
Now I have about five scopes with lots of bits n pieces and I'm now building an observatory to put it all in hahahaha 😈😈
Don't say I didn't warn ya lmfao 🤣 I just love noobies 👍👍
Welcome Drew it's an awesome camp and the guys are always willing to help 😈🤗😜👍⭐️⭐️

Now, now Jen - calm yourself.
Because of that monster of an observatory you're building our skies are going to be clagged up for the rest of the year!:rofl:;)

Sweet Drew - there will be cake! (Or pavlova, or both come to think of it!)
Looking forward to seeing you (and everyone else!) in November.

PS We will get Jen to look after the purple icing!
TwistedRider
26-06-2018, 12:31 PM
Thanks Paul,
Cake is always good (purple icing included!)
I'm developing an acute issue where my wallet bursts open every time i look a a telescope for sale. I may have to take drastic action to resolve this :astron:
Hoping to have a look through some scopes this weekend (have made the requisite sacrifices to the weather gods :cloudy: ) and get an idea what i want to start with. Hopefully will have a new toy to bring to the AstroCamp.
Cheers,

I have found that regular small purchases of gear helps to train the muscle that keeps the wallet closed.
Sometimes!

This is true, but usually an initial large investment is also needed to give focus for the following smaller purchases.

Do we have a resident butcher? Or byo meaty bits?
pfitzgerald
01-08-2018, 10:09 AM
Malcom organises the meat from the local butcher plus salads - all for $10, from memory usually any profit from the spit goes to charity. But I'll let Malcom clarify my comments if needed. Not to be missed!
Malcom I'll leave the cakes and purple icing! to others - but I'll do a couple of pavlovas.

Daniel,
I am sure you will be welcome, just let Malcolm know you are coming.
If you are coming with equipment there is a small fee for using place & power point, and of course if you are staying overnight, make sure accommodation is still available.

01-09-2018, 08:56 AM
Hi Daniel - anyone who has an interest in astronomy is welcome. If you don't have gear of your own you will have the opportunity to look at, and look through, what others have (a great way to start and get some good advice if you don't yet have your own gear). As Bojan suggested, contact Malcolm for all the details wrt registration etc. Hopefully we will see you there.

Oohhh we just love noobies Daniel 😈😈 come along you will learn so much and the people there are very helpful. And we don't bite (much) hehehe

Thanks heaps guys for the reply, I have attached a photo of my recently built 18”, I also have a 12” skywatcher I will be bringing. I usually just use these at home in Melbourne. Thanks guys. I hope to see you there.

Great stuff. Could I check Malcolm, I think I paid up my membership with the first camp this year?
I will be up with my son again at least one night so will probably do the same as last time, book a bunkhouse which will be shared with Andy but I will use a tent the night/s my son is with us so I can have him sleeping next to the field so I can keep on observing when he runs out of puff. If Andrew won't be able to attend I will release the bunkhouse for someone else, I will pay the bunkhouse cost either way.

Now to buy a new tent, and a trailer for some of the gear. With potentially three of us coming the amount of gear has out grown my ute! Two EQ6 type tripods, an EQ6, an AZEQ6, at least three scopes (One of them a dob) ann all the assorted stuff that comes that it. And we need the back seat now if there are three of us.

The_bluester
24-10-2018, 09:47 AM
Speaking of trailers, I just bought a covered 6 X 4 as the amount of gear we are bringing nowadays was getting challenging in the ute.
I just bought new sleeping bags too, I have paid for a cabin (Which Andy01 is in too) but I will be in my nice new tent with the young bloke. We were pretty cold last time out so a couple of -10 sleeping bags and mats to keep us from leaking too much heat down through the stretchers was the go.
Hehehe thanks Paul 🤗🤗
I would love to bring it with me but I don’t think it will fit in my car haha

Hi all,
On behalf off the noisy one... (you all know who I mean )
Does anyone have a spare T2 adapter, like this one shown below, that we may be able to borrow (or purchase) for use at Snake Valley this weekend ?
It has an external T2 (42mm) thread one end, and an Internal M48 mm thread at the other end. Approx 42mm in length overall.
Any help appreciated to get "She, who shall be obeyed" off my back. :)

ok I’m a lot excited hahaha 🙃🙃😜😜🤪🤪😈😈

Thanks Jen,
From what I've been told I shall just require a microwave, or an oven to heat a few things up.
Excited and looking forward to this weekend.
Hopefully I can get everything aligned and collimated early on.

Well, it seems I will not have a lot of time to see you guys over this weekend...
I started the flooring work in our house in Ballarat - and once in the mood, it is not a good idea to stop. Or is it?
Clear skies..

Have just arrived home and unpacked - now to process all those lovely photons I captured - especially last night's, they were really good ones!
To Malcolm and Paul thank you for organising another great camp. To the new folk I hope that you enjoyed the camp, it was great to have you with us.
To John and Cam (Astronomy Down Under) thank you both for your informative talks. Thanks to Steve for the spit roast on Saturday night, and as always thank you to the regulars for your fellowship, help and company.
As Andy said: "Is it March yet!?"

Thanks to the crew for another enjoyable camp. With Toph there I did not really get a lot of viewing done but it was really more about getting him out for the weekend. We ended up spending a good chunk of time sitting in camp chairs watching for meteors, and he spotted what looked to have been an old, tumbling satellite so something new for him. I should have taken down the time and location to see if I could look it up and work out what it was.
I still got couple of great borrowed views, the usual wow moments on familiar targets through some nice big dobs, and a great view through a nice big frac showing what sort of contrast you can get with no central obstruction, 100mm + fracs are not my usual fare at all.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome on Saturday evening. Great to see some faces from years ago when I last attended and many new folks to meet. A particular thanks to Paul for kindly sharing time on SDM055 so I could reacquaint with old friends in the southern skies.
I didn't have substantial cold weather gear - toes froze at 4am Sunday at 2 deg C. Next time I'll be ready with the right gear and scope(s?) for four solid nights of enjoyment.
Is it March yet?
Eric
And indeed - many thanks Malcolm!

I just want to wish my favourite Snake Valley peeps a merry merry xmas :P
There is no such thing a good astro camp without my review afterwards :)
It took me a while to recover from this one after going to the Nhill camp too the weekend before, I think I was on my best behaviour at this camp (well sort of hehehe) Friday night nothing would work for me grrrrr i had software issues big time  Sat night I nutted out all my issues and I was on a mission and I got a few cool pics this time woohoo
Unfortunately SV didn't do its usual ritual of being clear on the last night but we were treated with awesome weather the first two nights this time round  )
I was very impressed with how clean the kitchen (mostly stayed clean this time) good job guys

Was awesome to see Erick again cheers buddy ;)
And Cams aboriginal talk was very cool :):) thanks Cam
And most of all, you all really are a great bunch of people to be around ( seriously) so much knowledge happily shared around during the whole camp is just awesome, (I even felt a little special as I got to share my knowledge to someone else for a change) see I can be a good student hey John G hahaha......… hehehe
I just want to thank you all for such an amazing relationship we have (my fav little astro family) my highlight was my little surprise from Paul, the purple pavs to celebrate my obs was just so cool :D:D:D:D:D thank you Paul (I felt a little bit special) hehehe it was yummy as too :P:P
