Is there a technique or method that can be used to get a reasonable polar alignment when you can't see the south celestial pole due to trees obstructing the view?
My backyard is surrounded by some quite tall trees so a view of octans is impossible.
Thanks in advance.

Compass and inclinometer followed by drift alignment.

Yep, what Peter says. To expand on that I use this to start with, http://www.iceinspace.com.au/63-498-0-0-1-0.html
then drift align with this method http://www.astrotarp.com/drift_method-2.html

Hi Malcolm,
Refer my post HEQ5 Alignment 18/2/2018 and read all the replies and information
It should steer you in the right direction to reach a pretty close polar alignment

I use an alignment using a star and the zenith.
