Hi

I have just picked up a 2nd hand 8" Dob to take to Lostock next weekend,
however with the Crayford style focuser it will not hold position when at
close to horizontal. The 30mm WF lens (Gawd it's huge) is another kilo
and does not help.

Anyone know if there is a source of counterweights (6" steel circles?)
that are readily available to help balance the tube?

Also picked up my drought breaker 12" GSO dob, but that stays home.

Many thanks

You could try speaker magnets with felt on them or someone I know used a magnetic torch it was just enough weight to balance the tube. .

I use a web luggage strap and a couple of rectangular lead divers weights.

Hi

Many thanks for the link, I guess I will have to find a dive shop
after next weekend, and just suffer it as is on Friday night.

Unfortunately the rear mounting plate is alloy - ie non magnetic
and using the tube I am sure will mar it - pity.

Looking forward to the camp-out and dark skies.

Yep, speaker magnets are the go. Go to Spotlight and get some stick on felt and they will not scar your tube too much. Balance is one of the big problems with the GS mounts, their Alt bearings are just too small. Since going up to 12" bearings I no longer have to use my magnets.

If you cannot find some old speakers then I have also seen ankle weights from sport stores used. They are soft and have velcro straps so they are easy to put on the scope. Worth a look.

Cheers
