Hi all I just finished looking at Lewis's neat job on his Takahashi clamshell so I thought I would show my little repair job .

For starters if you dont know , I had a large drop of my EQ2 and LP 60mm triplet a while ago and posted the damage and repair of the LP's focuser a few weeks ago .

Here is the mount repair , yes I know its only an EQ2 but I have stripped , teflon bearing'd it , cleaned and adjusted it and it's now a great little grab and go setup easily carrying the tiny LP triplet .

These mounts are built to a price , sic. , CHEAP ! and the real weak link is those horrible tab's sticking out at the top each side of the dec axis , this takes that equally horrible bar  and not allowing a puc to be fitted at all , anyway one snapped off in the fall .
Nothing a bit of Gorilla glue and small alloy plate did not fix .

Next up a small 6mm plate shaped , drilled , threaded and counter sunk to bolt to the mount top thus being able to fit a GSO puk .

The finished item is way stronger than the standard setup and I am back to being able to drag the whole lot out for a look at the moon etc in zero time , great :D ..

I know it aint no Tak. but its mine ;) .

Brian.

What!!!, only teflon?????:D
I wasted far more time and effort on my EQ2
( totally not cost effective )
and converted the RA axle to run on ball bearings.
Smoooooooooth as.

Andrew

 Awesome Andrew , we have all sorts lying around at work and 1/2 an hour with our lathe got mine running very smooth , pretty good little mounts if you don't overload them .

Gday Brian

Agreed. Mine is mainly to hold my PST, so a simple light mount is more than adequate, but having the RA on ball bearings made moving it a lot smoother.

As anyone in this hobby knows, its only worth doing yourself if it costs ten times more and takes twenty times longer than a bought item

;) Simple yes , simple to use in Alt/Az mode as well , you would be suprised how many people don't realise these are can be very nice little Alt/Az mount as well .

Exactly like the older Vixen Polaris mounts .

I'd pour a good lot of JB Weld in there and really stiffen things up B, but I am sure this'll work. Nice save!

I just took back one of my former GPD's...such a superb mount! Now just to find the right scope to put on top!
