NGC 602 in the SMC
Todays APOD image shows NGC 602 in the SMC. It looks like a giant fiery mouth eating stars. The galaxies in the background are amazing.

NGC 602 can be seen with an 8" or larger scope.

That is a spectacular image!! makes a nice wallpaper image too, will have to
chase down NGC602.

Two nearby galaxies - long thought to be true companions of the Milky Way - may instead be drifters, passing through the cosmic neighbourhood. Astronomers say the Magellanic Clouds may be moving too fast to be gravitationally bound to our galaxy. If the clouds were satellites of our galaxy, the Milky Way would contain twice as much mass as is thought.

Good point Glen. Still i reckon its safe to blink, they could have a common destiny with MW and another largish galaxy nearby.

I visit that site as often as possible in the mornings, always learn something new too, but havent much recently- thanks for the link and reminder.
