Caught these shots of a Kingfisher very high in our next door neighbor's tree.

Got so excited ......forgot my glasses and didn't have time to put the camera on precision zoom.. so pics are cropped and not too clear but it was a special time seeing a kingfisher in our area for the first time . :)

Not sure which Kingfisher it is ... maybe a Forest or a Red-Backed ... anyone have a clue which one it may be

Sacred kingfisher ? pretty common. They look like the long billed Kingfisher, same size. Hard to be sure as they are both to be found on waterways inland and coastal, the sacred is the more common by far.

Thanks Stephen. I didn't mention the Sacred because in my book it looked more of a greenish colour than blue. But after reading the description of the bird's call I'm sure that it is the Sacred Kingfisher.

His wings are nearly the same colour as the sky!
Maybe he'll come back for a close up one day.
Don't forget your specs.

Hi Guys

What an excellent pic. Is it true that the Kookaburra is related to the Kingfisher, or are they part of the "Kingfisher" family of birds?

Not sure which is which?

Cheers Petra

Thats right Petra, the Kookaburra is a Kingfisher. What he lacks in colour he makes up for in size and voice.
