It just dawned on me I've only got one more week of leave to go before I start a new chapter in my working career.

A couple of months ago I decided I'd had enough of getting up at 3am, Monday to Friday.

I've done that for the best part of a decade during my commercial radio career, either as a broadcaster or as a news journalist/reader.

On its own the hours would be bad enough, without the havoc it played with my true passion, astronomy. Can you imagine having to force yourself to go to bed around 8-30pm during the week!!!

So I've thrown it in and accepted a position in media/marketing with Cricket ACT, the State governing organisation for cricket here in the Territory.

It's a very exciting time as the organisation looks to host more 1st class cricket matches and ultimately big international one-dayers and maybe a Test match in the future with the development of Manuka Oval.

There's a genuine feeling of optimism and enthusiasm which I'm really looking forward to being a part of.

What a way to start 2007.

Oh... and I get to stay up a little later on school nights:lol:

Just wanted to share some personal detail with my fellow IISers

The new job sounds great, Matt! For a cricket lover it must be a dream come true!

And to get to stay up later and look at the sky, what a bonus :)

I get up at around 4:30am most weekdays.. if I'm imaging I just get less sleep, rather than not do it :)

Congrats on the change, sounds like a good move.

Congratulations on the new job.

Reminds me that I should really be looking for a job rather than reading these damn forums!
(once I've finished the binocular mount I'll start looking, real soon now...)

Thanks again folks.

I'm honestly very grateful for your kind words.

It's actually not quite as big a departure as it appears, Petra.

I'll be using all the skills I've acquired over many years as a journalist to write things like press releases and marketing material.

I'll also often be the first point of contact when journos from press, radio or TV get in touch. Having been a newspaper, magazine and radio journalist I'm well placed to deal with their requests and inquiries.

Also, prior to the job I've just left I was Sports Editor at a radio station in Geelong.

What I'm really looking forward to is the corporate/sponsor relations side of the job. This is something quite new to me and a real opportunity to add to my experience and skills.

There'll also be many public speaking opportunities and events management requirements.

I really see this is a great opportunity to advance my career and grow personally, not just maintain my own status quo.

There's also a large involvement with local juniors and their various associations which I think will be very challenging and rewarding.

Now, more than probably at any other time, we need to be doing everything we can to encourage and promote healthy lifestyles to our kids:)
