BOM is predicting storms and unusually heavy rainfall for most of Victoria from Friday to Sunday - check those gutters :)

"HEAVY RAIN and SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS which may lead to FLASH FLOODING are likely to develop in the far west during THURSDAY night before extending across the remaining parts of the State during FRIDAY. The heavy rain and thunderstorm activity will continue on SATURDAY.
Three day totals of around 60-120mm are expected south of the Divide and over the far northwest with totals of 100-200mm for remaining areas on and north of the Divide. However, totals over the northeast ranges may exceed 250mm.
Locations which may be affected include Mildura, Horsham, Warrnambool, Bendigo, Shepparton, Seymour, Maryborough, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Wodonga, Wangaratta, Traralgon and Bairnsdale."

Yep, they are a bit worried about this one. They don't tend to issue warnings two days out, and we even received emails about it here in the office.

I will be out with the shovel tonight expanding a couple of drains, whatever twit built my shed (Not us, it was there when we bought the place) built it on a low spot and right in the middle of where water flows in heavy rain. it may as well be in a creek.

Got the same problem in the back yard too, the septic system might as well be built in the middle of a river in really heavy rain. About once in three years it is a problem (Historically, every year for the last three years as things have gone) It is a bad design and flooding it at this part of it's life may mean "fix with backhoe" Hopefully some well placed hay bales will divert the water away from it.

I am at Tabulam now and it has that feeling it will flood ...in a week, or a month or a year or two.

There was that Tele Vue sale recently; might be a combined effect of all the eyepieces about to arrive. I've got a 4mm and 5mm Delite due to arrive tomorrow.

It'll be good to get the rainfall, so long as we don't get washed away. I'll be cleaning gutters tonight and I'll bring the generator up to the house.

I made sure to get out with the scope last night for a look at some craters and rilles and collimated the Binotron.

It certainly will. Here in East Gippsland it has been the driest year since I began recording in 2008. In 2009 we got only 595mm. So far this year 505mm. All other years between 900 and 1100 mm.
Some locals have run out of rain water. We are fortunate in having huge storage and have been able to give some away but the country is desperately dry and even the native forest is suffering.

My folks are in Orbost and it's dry there too Ian. The East isn't supposed to get as much as some areas but they've increased the upper limit on the rainfall predictions this afternoon.
Up to 90mm per day for Warragul. The weather might be more entertaining than the TV.

Reckon the BOM has been crying wolf again. There's a sprinkle at Warrnambool, nothing else.

Doesn't hurt to be prepared though. I found two blocked downpipes while cleaning the gutters.

cleaned gutters, raked gullies but by the look of it I'm going to get drowned, we have had over 100mm in the last 3 weeks , the ground won't hold more. Upside? our dams may just fill for the first time in 3 years.....

Already had a taste of what's to come around 9:30am just outside Edenhope.
Never seen a mini flood in 20 minutes before !!!!
Also sideways rain and lightingvwas pretty special followed by a hot humid afternoon.
We've still got between 100mm to 250mm to come!!!
Take care all
Andy

Haven't had a drop as yet, and it is 9.40 pm, and the weather man tells us it is all over, may get a sprinkle here and there, who knows.

If you're in Ballarat Leon take a look at the radar - rain on your doorstep. The BOM is forecasting the heavy rain event to go through to Sunday so I wouldn't take down the brolly yet :)

Pouring down here in Langkoop near the SA vic border, west wimera region.
Just checked the radar and this is tiny compared to whats coming from the north west.
im sure Ballarat will get a drenching but not until later friday to Saturday.
Just going out to watch the lightning show.
Cheers.

Thanks for the reminder Tony, it was on the list. We took 8 buckets (5L) out of two 2nd storey box gutters yesterday!!! Atleast it's done.... We only have a sprinkle of rain at the moment.

The 10:50am update has downgraded the expected rain from 100-200mm to 50-150mm for Melbourne. Still significant.

Got an inch in warragul today, bit short of the forecast deluge but still a welcome drop with more on the way.

Over predicted again by the bureau. We were predicted to have 25-45mm in Adelaide with falls over 120mm in the hills. What a complete exaggeration. I have gauged 19mm total for three days and I live in the hills.

The bureau were quizzed about this yesterday and their excuse was a bit limp and shows that they still cannot really predict weather despite some very sophisticated tools.

I wonder how much rain fell in Victoria? Certainly not anything over 50mm according to the rain radar this morning.

The problem with this crying wolf is that eventually people will simply ignore the advice and that is what will lead to that one time when it actually does belt down and cause flash funding and death. In SA we have had several instances in recent years where this sort of thing was predicted and it did not eventuate.

Hasn't stopped raining in CBR since around 7pm last night. Nice red mud flowing down the slope outside my door lol. Not heavy rain, but constant.

The radar looks impressive enough here, but it's nearly all in the blue bands.

39mm to 8.30am (from the start of rain late yesterday) so pretty much spot on so far....

I think local has been 34mm, so yes, spot on the mark.

Still raining here.

Very welcome 36mm here. Looks like the BOM mainly got the location wrong with the storms being farther east than predicted.

Eased right off to a light drizzle here, total of 93.1mm of rain.. Only low cloud now but still 8/8, bitterly cold wind out of the West...

52mm till 8am today, bit above expected but it starts again tomorrow 5-10mm forecast for Monday and 10-20 Tuesday.

61mm here with the addition of a big downpour overnight.

With the radar looking clear yesterday morning we went to Melbourne but got caught in heavy rain which appeared out of nowhere in the late afternoon - no fun driving on freeways with a few mm of water across the surface. I guess the moisture was just hanging in the air waiting to condense.

The garden looks vibrant after a dry month but Aussie Broadband might have had issues with water damage as the service has been in and out.

No rain out here this morning, but it's looking like it wants to any time soon.

The radishes and celery certainly appreciated it. Our pet Magpies, Mickies, Crows, Currawongs and Cockatoos all came calling yesterday - really funny what Mickies and Magpies look like drenched!

EDIT: 7pm and it has not even drizzled once. Lovely clear day, albeit cool from all the evap going on!

Only 29mm here in Langkoop, Victoria.
A bit under the 150mm predicted.
On Thursday night it looked like it was well on the way and then stopped for the rest of the weekend.
The North East got hit pretty hard but lucky not the 250-300.

Now thats over the clouds and moon can go away and give us back clear dark skies.

Has not stopped raining around Hobart for 24 hours. Roads flooded, some washed away and waterfalls everywhere. They reckon we have another 6 hours to go. I suspect the rain guage will top 100mm on my block but may be a while before I can get there again. Wowser !

We had 60mm up to 10am sat. Another 70mm sat/sun morning and only about 4 mm sun/mon morning. Tanks and dams all full now. Weren't to bad before. I calculated our shed would have collected about 25000lts over the weekend.

One of my partners facebook friends hand 291mm by sat morning and was still raining. Not sure were they live.
