Last week I wanted to see if I could capture the Milky Way setting over Melbourne. I positioned myself on a road at Kinglake and took these two shots as a comparison of the view north and south from this location.

To the south the Milky Way, barely visible, is drowned out by Melbourne's increasing light pollution. To the north, facing darker skies, the Andromeda Galaxy reveals it's presence low on the horizon.

30secs f3.5@ 16mm. Modded Canon 550d Tokina f2.8 11-16mm lens.

Thanks Mick,
That's a nice comparison and a very decent Ha pickup esp. in the 1st image.

It would be interesting to compare with another photo taken on Earth Hour.

I'm not sure that enough people would participate in the event to show any difference. When's the next Earth Hour?

Michael, interesting images.

The Local Galaxy M33 can also be seen, just to the left of the Y shaped, electricity tower in your norther image.

In Sydney ..24th March 2018, between 830 to 930 pm..Not sure that it made much difference last .prob if it was later , when even more lights would be off anyway it would.

Bob, you're right, I see it now. That galaxy might be worth having a crack at down here in Victoria as it's a little higher than M31 and quite sizable by the look of it. Might try it in late August or early September when it will be a very early morning apparition. Good one for my Esprit 100.
