This was one of those poorly kept secrets, rumours of the discovery started to circulate in late September.
Christopher Berry from LIGO couldn't give a response until the official announcement date.

Hi everyone, if you do a sound analysis of the collision, there seem to be a smaller subsequent "bang" following the bigger main "bang", does anyone know why this is the case?
