Thanks! Dragonflies can be tricky - it's best to try and catch them either a) very early in the morning whilst it's still early and cold or b) late in the afternoon when they're happy to sun themselves. Just approach slowly, quietly, from below their eye height and do NOT let your shadow cross over them.

i have always loved watching them, but haven't seen very many here in Tas since moving here.

Summer is the time to find them, along where creek beds are, and especially either reeds, or tall grasses. You'll see them perched on reeds/grasses in Summer sunning themselves quite often, even mating.

I watched them endlessly when I was a kid on the south coast of NSW. The most amazing creatures.
I think I can count on the fingers of one hand the number I've seen in 30yrs in Tas. If I could find them, I'd be set up with my camera regularly :-)
