View Full Version here: : Hobbies that often co-exist with Astronomy

Long time ago when at school (In the Apollo, Moon-landing years) , I had many friends who were into Astronomy and had telescopes. We also played Chess (almost daily) and were all good players.

I visited some Astronomy Clubs where a sizeable minority of the membership were into flying radio-controlled aircraft.

Any readers into the above activities, or have noted any other narrow interests (not talking about drinking beer or following sport!) that other amateurs often pursue?

Photography, camping, programming, weather watching are probably the most closely associated hobbies to astronomy that I have (but I have lots of hobbies... may main hobby is collecting hobbies...).

I've been partaking in Radio Yachting since about 1994.
(That is what it is now know as.)
Used to be along the lines of, Radio Controlled Model Yachts.
It's a World Wide hobby & the World Title regattas are held in a variety of countries.
There are numerous clubs/societies in Aust that hold local club events & State Titles etc., etc.

Photography, gold and silver smithing, some hobby chemistry.
And traveling, recent trips South Africa and New Zealand and upcoming trip Australia.
Traveling is also combined with astronomy as I travel to regions with much better skies than cloudy, light polluted and far north Holland.

Fly fishing and cycling. They all follow the n+1 rule.
And I haven't yet decided which of fly fishing and astrophotography is the more frustrating. I do know I am equally bad at all 3 pursuits.

Photography, Motorsports ( mainly Rally & photographing fast cars,) gardening, Workshopping projects, Ebikes and EV projects.

Used to boat (Fishing, Safety Patrol and Search & Rescue operations ) a lot but it got too expensive for the limited time I had available.

I think we all become amateur meteorologists! :cloudy: I suppose understanding the weather is part of the skill set of an astronomer but it's also become an interest in its own right, especially against the background of global warming.

As others have mentioned, photography has obvious overlaps with astronomy. Then camping because both appeal to nature lovers who like being outdoors. Then anything around science and technology is likely to appeal to an astronomer. Lots of astronomers are into electronics and computing, though that's often their job. On the other hand I know very few astronomers who are into mountain climbing, cross country running or yoga. Tarot cards, reading tea leaves and sacrificing goats are right out.

For me - paragliding + astronomy because somewhere nice to fly was usually also a good area for stargazing.

Many times did actually manage to take the glider and go flying by day, followed by stargazing the same night.

But stopped flying last year due to other commitments.

I have had some..
Starting with the first and working thru life....
First was gardening, then drawing pencil and ink, water colours then oil paint ,designing and building rubber band model planes, gliders, had a decent Chemistry set and an oridinary toy microscope, loved chess, square dancing, in the brass band, ice skating, roller scating, guitar, three string guitar, judo and jujitsu, rock collecting, fishing, canoes, snooker, pool, darts, archery, skin diving, moto cross, short circuit, trap shooting, skeet shooting, sailing and boat building, and astronomy.

Still like chess..3000 games on the phone so far. Drawing and astronomy are the current choices. I would like to get another microscope as that can be interesting.

I wish JA !!
Nah, can't lift them with a drone nor have a way to control them.
But I'm fascinated by them, amazing 'wavelengths'.

Happy days the materials just now arrived to build my mini observatory..4 ft x 4 ft x 4ft...got to try and get it all up the stairs now... and must put the mount back to gether after a late pull down last night.
I like astronomy as it presents many challenges just to set up...
Got some black grout thought the pier would look nice in black cement.

Employing a very broad brush "Hobbies that often co-exist with Astronomy". I would wager within any Astro group, there will be a sailor, angler, bushwalker all of whom have enjoyed a dark sky.
I believe any activity that gets you under a dark sky at night will inevitably lead you into Astro stuff.

Off road adventure riding on my heavily modified DR 650. About to head off on a 4000 km round trip. Should be fun. Taking a pair of binos with me.

Martin, you forgot to mention "collecting telescopes". That's a mighty list you have there ;)
