My son Jack nearly trod on this little critter.
Husbands first reaction was "Where's the shovel?"
I just ran for the camera.
Very pretty colours and banding on him. I think it was either a tree or grass snake.

Piccies loaded. They are rather fuzzy cause the snake wouldn't keep still.
It was only the front quarter of him that had the colours.
A red band on the sides with a blue/purple one below it. His eyes had yellow on either side of them.
We let him go on his way.

That's where the shovel would've helped :P

Yellow faced whip snake Jeanette  Poisonous but has back fangs so not really a problem for adults. Might have caused Jack some problems though :scared:

The photos don't do it justice, the colours were quite bright.

ahh! Demansia psammophis :)
I had a pet one of these. facinating creatures :)

if you are bitten say on teh finger by one of these you finger will swell up for a bit and thats about it. they arent really dangerous at all unless you have some sort of alergic reaction to the venom... I wouldnt touch it either way unless you know what you are doing.
mine was about 1 meter long :)

I think it's about time we got rid of the attitude that every snake must be killed.
If you live in the country with lots of bush around as Jeanette and I do you should learn to live and let live.
Also they help to keep down rodents and vermin.

Yes I agree - I would be the one who goes for the camera.

Cheers Petra

I agree Astroron, they are more of a benefit than a nuisance and they were in the bush before we were. I am building on a 5 acre lock and we have plenty around but I am yet to see a rodent of any type.
Even though I am a confessed snake coward, I still love to watch them move around hunting and going about their business and if they come to close to house I just stamp on the ground and they move away on the own accord.
The Platypuss is also poisonous but I dont see a need to kill them either

Cheers

the platypus is coming right for us!!! shoot it! LOL

I dont think mike was saying that we should have a snake whacking day or anything :P
face it, if its a snake or a family member you know who comes first :) and this is from a person who loves all animals :)

If it was a brownie, I would have gone for the shovel myself.
I won't tolerate really dangerous ones that near the house. I've got the kids and pets to think about.

I have heard that quite a few people have been bitten trying to be a shovel man:P if they had left them alone they wouldn't have been, bitten that is:)

this is quite right. people are more likely to get bitten trying to"interact" with the snake. if you cant take it out froma distance then dont take it out at all. I am afriad a shovel gets you too close for comfort to an angry brown snake... try a hose (yeah i know, water restrictions)
