Well I've had the PST for nigh on a fortnight now and this morning it cleared for about 3/4 of an hour. A quick setup and I rattled off a dozen avies.

I tried both the ToUcam and the SAC 4.2. I've had to screw the end of a 2x barlow into the 1.25" adapter to get them to come to focus atm (working on that), consequently the ToUcam was a bit overpowered for the conditions and was a bit fuzzy. The SAC with the bigger chip was fine. Unfortunately the DMK ain't here yet :( . The ToUcam collected just about everything in the red channel (which is what you would expect, but doesn't always happen apparently), while the SAC leaked across the channels which made exposure hard to work out (the red ended up way over exposed). Unfortunately using colour cameras like the ToUcam that only 25% of the signal is collected in the red (anybodies guess for the other channels) because of the bayer layer.

I collected a few prominance shots as well, but they were over exposed and were too hard to match with the disc shots (reads: I couldn't be bothered mucking around with them too much, I'll wait till I get the DMK ;) )

This is the best of the bunch, using just the green channel of the SAC 4.2 (Lot of channel leakage, the green channel should be black :P ). All in all though for a first go I'm pretty happy. You can see on the colour version the problem with exposure with the hot spot (patch) in the top right quadrant.

Nice work Paul

I believe it's 25% red, 25% blue and 50% green with the bayer pattern in the ToUcam;)

Thanks Matt.

If it was full spectrum it would be, but I don't know how much (pure red) is leaking across.

Since about mid-2005 :P Boy we're on the ball this year Steve  :poke:

Thanks guys, I'm really looking forward to the new mono camera coming. No need to worry about additional filters for this one  Unfortunately I think I'll have to chop down the adapter though to get it to come to focus :(

No h0ughy, it's on the standard PST. The extra filter is still a couple of weeks away.

 I've pretty much given up trying to use my ToUcam with the PST, for now, because I had trouble achieving focus... I put it down to too much light on the lappy screen, and touchy focus, and a wobbly alt-az mount combined with the narrow FOV (causing me to have to frequently chase the image, and thus test my patience:P )... I never even considered that I might not be able to achieve focus!

Thanks Paul  ;) ... no one else seems to have mentioned that they'd have to mod anything to make the ToUcam work with the PST...

Let us know how it goes if you do!

Al.

Paul,

How much (roughly) was the second filter? You can PM me if you like. The prices I have seen seem to be around the price of another PST or higher... just wondering if I'm looking at the wrong thing entirely:shrug: ...

Al a couple of option to consider for achieving focus. The quickest and most non invasive is to remove the lens cell from a barlow and screw it into the 1.25" ToUcam adapter. You can find a bit more info here http://www.astro-nut.com/sun-pst.html . Have a look at his site, there is some great solar info there. In particular download the Solar Primer PDF.

I'll let you know how I go with modifying an adapter (I have to get another one first incase I stuff up the one I have  )
