A valuable example and word of caution when stowing camera gear for flight.

Something doesn't quite add up about that story IMHO.

What fool leaves $10k worth of lens attached to body, with just a filter on the front and tosses that into a checked bag. Anyone with half a brain would have separated the two, put the caps on and placed them in a protective bag of some sort first.

And as for the lens - it looks like it has been hit with an icepick. That kind of damage doesn't happen inside a checked bag and whatever hit it would have gone through a hardshell suitcase as well.

Personally I reckon this was dropped or smashed by someone and the owner is now trying to claim damage - or it's a PR stunt.

I agree Wavy - tastes like an insurance claim scam to me.

I had all my lenses and camera in a simple Lowepro bag. When moving house, I somehow lost grip of it, and it bounced (in slow motion ) down a tall flight of stairs, thudding onto the tiled floor at the bottom and bouncing into the front door.

Damage - NIL.

I have seen bag chuckers hurl some bags, but you'd have to have nil brains to leave a camera attached in a soft bag. Just reeks of stupidity (which most people that can afford Leica AREN'T) or scam.

We will never know for sure, but I agree with Wavy, it is quite possible that the camera with the lens attached was dropped and damaged by the owner, and then he or she checked in damaged camera in hope for a some sort of compensation from the airline.

My cameras have always gone in the hold, I'm well traveled and never had a problem but I also know how to pack things. If your dumb enough just to whack it in your bag without care you are indeed a fool especially with something that expensive but I have learnt the world is full of fools :(
