View Full Version here: : Indy's Whip - RCW114 Mosaic

Three Panel Mosaic featuring RCW114 in HaRGB, from Melbourne.
I previously posted a single section of this huge but very faint nebula which has rarely if ever photographed by amateurs.
Now with the extra FOV data, it looks a bit like Indiana Jones' whip :D
... or a Martian Rock snake from Captain Scarlet, or a Zucchini flower - who knows?
It was originally thought to be a ring nebula surrounding the Wolf-Rayet star WR 90, expanding into a pre-existing cavity created by the supernova remnant 343.0-06.0. However, current research suggests that is much closer to us than WR90, so is an Ancient SNR in it's own right.
This is now 1/2 of the region in this FOV.

Kudos on the integration time there Andy, with a really good result. The Ha has been blended nicely here.
cheers

Andy that is truly superb. Crisp and sharp and very detailed. Enjoyed the research too.
If you have a look at Greg Bradley's widefield of the Milky Way in Ha (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=159142&page=2), you can see your Ha structure at 6 o'clock. It looks very like an SNR.
Very well done!

Wonderful effort Andy. You've gone this far so now you should finish it ;)
I was just thinking the same thing Mike... or Trish

Hey thanks for commenting Martin, and cheers for the nice compliments on the image. - All credit though to MARCO (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=138473) for his HaRGB blending technique.
Cheers Brett :)
Thanks Mike - and thanks also for pointing out the SNR on Greg's image - looks like there's plenty more rare and tasty goodies in the Milky way for us to image. :D
Thanks Colin - not sure if I have the patience to continue with this target or to simply move on - there's always next year :)
Cheers Marc - SNR's are pretty funky things to image ;)
Lol, cheers Tim - but Indiana Jones is far more iconic :D
Thanks Rom, credit due to Peter Ward who kindly pointed me in the right direction to begin to achieve reasonable results when imaging RGB from light pollutionville.
No substitute for a dark sky but it's hard to get away with three kids under 12 and the wife enjoying cocktails with the girls in Fiji this weekend :)

This is a great project Andy and yes, this one looks like an astroimage! The flowing red tendrils are really quite unique. I think your processing here looks much better than that used for your latest tarantula iteration.
Nice job

Cheers Pete, always a bit risky taking on something new with almond st no reference image- but it seems to have paid off
Cheers Rick :cool3:
Thanks for the compliment Mike - My technique may be improving but it's still a work in progress!
To me HaRGB is a bit easier to process than full tricolour NB - and it seems to suit this object. Not sure if I'll continue though, another three panels would be the minimum required to fit it all in!

Thanks Suavi - I'm pretty happy with the final result - still debating as to whether or not to press on with the other half or move on to something new!

Great image Andy. That's the object (its full shape is heart shaped) that I have seen a few times over the years when I have done Ha images of the Milky Way. And yes its rarely imaged as I had no idea what it was and as you say no one seems to image it.
I imaged it very widefield over the weekend and I'll post that in the next few days. Its quite a striking area.
Well done on such a good image of a rarely if ever imaged object (strange its missed the attention of astrophotographers).
Did you do any O111? I wonder if it has any O111 or is it all Ha? Come to think of it I have O111 data of the area. I'll have to check it.
Greg.

Yeah definitely do the other half. Its likely the Southern Hemisphere's Heart nebula.

I like this palette approach you have taken here Andy. It is certainly a long whippy looking string of gas.

Another "cracker" of an image Andy (boom tish!)
I actually thought it resembled the flame whip from Balrog from LOTR.

Lol, you're not the first to suggest that Raki :D
Thanks for nice compliment but I think Indiana Jones is far for iconic
Cheers Trevor, can you imagine the forces that once created this beast? Must have been a helluva big bang when that star went nova! :scared3:
Thanks very much Geoff - definately feeling the IIS love on this one now :D
Hi Greg, thanks for good vibes, looking forward to seeing your rendition. I havn't attempted any O3 as yet - will be interesting to see if you managed to get any. As to the other half, well ... it's not going anywhere in a hurry, but my patience might ;)
Thanks very much Paul - I asked my kids what they thought it looked like - hence the name, Paradolia rocks :)
Cheers Bo  Funnily enough we've been re-watching LOTR with the kids all this week - I see the Balrog reference clearly now that you mention it!
Hmmm  - Balrog's Whip, Flame whip - nah - let's stick with Indy :D
