Have been noticing the high number of posts by members compared to my own meagre contribution.

Eg Alex (Xelaxevans) has a whopping 7,564!! I think I have around 350. Who has the largest number of posts ever on IIS?

Be proud...who's the mostest?

Just a post to boost my post counter

Seriously, from that list most of the top people are still active (logged in date) and most of them joined over 10 years ago!!!

There are lots of folk with way more than me ...
My excuse is I don't participate in any other forums ..there was another for a little while but I have given up on them.
Mike must be over 35,000.
I post because I don't go out or socialise...much...and often iceinspace is my only contact with the outside world...once even when I was not watching TV or had the radio on and in the bush weeks on end I would come here.

So rather than boast my post I think it is a sad reflection of how anti social and hermit like I am most of the time.
And boasting is not a thing to encourage it walks hand in hand with vanity and pride each and all do not belong to one with decent values I would think...not judging others but I try and set a humble style for myself.

And the top three are admins ;)
I administrated a forum very similar to this architecture years ago and it allowed me to manipulate my post count.

Well we don't have that luxury. ;)

Well while posting you have been given a list.
That list is evidence that I don't post that much.

And at the end of the day, all high post count means is that a person has verbal diarrhoea.

Case in point :P

It would be interesting to see a breakdown of post counts by topic, as so many seem to be casual general conversational exchanges, ie people using IIS as a social media application, or messaging app. Private message count would also be interesting. I moderate another forum (non-astro) and moderators always have higher counts due to the work they do. I often wonder about the 'hijack count'.

 Never heard this one before. That said is there such a thing as buy n' sell diarrhoea? :scared3:

Number of posts divided by number of years as a member shows a better picture.

I only post general chat these days although just recently I have posted in other spots.
I avoid giving advice these days as there are many others better equipped and up to date with products and methods.
Once I would post as a crackpot in the science section in an effort to draw out real scientists and generate activity there.
I like just looking at the latest photos and reading about diy projects...I like to be not logged in cause I often use someone else's computer but some kind folk wonder if I am OK...I think family look in here to see if I am still alive...

You as a devil's advocate Alex...? Never!

Most people enjoy your posts my friend. Maybe you should write a book or magazine article on something esoteric.

I was going to write a book but I was in a shop and they had one for $5 so though damn it I will just by one...

I can't remember who first told that one so I can't give credit.

Its because I lack confidence and when things go quiet I feel pressured to say something.

On another forum I used to be very active on, whenever someone drew attention to their high post count the forum admin would change it to some low number (below 10)

Err, I have nearly 10,000, but i have been here a while
I reckon Mike would be the "Sir Post a Lot" ;)

PS, has anyone every gone through the list of members from A-Z :)
and find they join and never post again, I did, it is amazing, once joined you never hear from them again

Leon

There's a poster I know well on Cloudy Nights who's over 60,000. I remember noticing him cross 50,000 and then two weeks later he was at 51,000. Most of the high count guys seem to be in their more senior years, where life is a bit less hectic.

Hi Leon,

I’ve not done it here but on other forums I’ve been on the number of members I counted with zero post count was massive. There was even a rumour that some forum owners were actually entering dummy information just to be able to boast about how many thousands of members they had - perhaps to increase the possible value of selling advertising on a site or even boost the price to flog the whole forum later. There was also a rumour that some forum software could come 'pre-seeded' with dummy members just to kick start the first months when many might be less likely to join a forum with , say, only half a dozen prior members

But the prevalence of the same phenomenon on so many forums might suggest that a lot of people do actually join and then never say anything. Odd. :screwy:

It’s also quite common (just check the beginner forums here) for people to join up and post something along the line sof “Hi I’m Fred, and I’m interested in astronomy. I’m looking forward to asking you guys some questions”. and then never actually asking anything! Of course if it’s “Hi, I’m Freda…” then they seem to get more replies and warm welcomes (funny about that… :) ) but are equally likely to never post again.

I think that word count is also an issue not just post count. We have some Twitter style posters here who post multiple one liners and others who really give their keyboards a workout.

I have a low post count, but - boy - can I waffle on when I get going… :)

Cheers,

Chris

You're too kind Alex. I'm apparently actually two months older than you are. The only possible explanation is that it must be an old photo. :)

When I hit 70 I decided I needed some new hobbies, so I chose astronomy and whisky. Not to become a drunk but to learn about the history and manufacture of the many different styles and brands. I'd been a virtual non-drinker for years and some friends were concerned that I might become too enthusiastic about drinking it (I didn't) so I took another picture just to prove that drinking whisky had no effect at all on me. :)

In the event it only stayed interesting for a few months, during which I spent a handful of cash obsessively collecting different bottles, only to find out that I had cheap tastes and very little ability to discern quality! ;) Some of the collection is still under the stairs.

Perhaps I should use the photo as my avatar?

Cheers,

Chris

One can never be too kind. Kindness is a quality that should have no limits.
Which photo is an old photo..I am not sure what you mean.

Not sure about IIS but some forums do not display ads if you are logged in. This would explain why people create accounts and log in but never post. They just like to read without the ads.
