suggestions for moving scope interstate

I am buying a very expensive second hand scope and want it shipped from Vict to tas. who can I trust (with insurance) ? pack and send?
aus post?
cheaper to go and fetch it? :lol:

Most pack and send places refuses to insure goods over $1000.
Hop on the ferry and come to sunny Melbourne to get it :P
Not sure if they will increase the fees over the school holidays, so check ahead.

Make it a weekend, take the ferry and pick it up :) Expensive telescope sounds like one with a bit of weight so it may even be cheaper.

Melbourne Bintel was the one that closed.

If possible have the scope packed well enough that it can survive a 6 foot drop to the concrete (lots of bubble wrap) then just use Australia Post.

It'll be to big for Au post. I used to use P&S... but not no more. You could go over by ferry on the day sailing, with no car, use a taxi to pick up and come back on the arvo ferry... Leave the car in Devonport. Cant wait for a peek ol' boy... :thumbsup:

Alan, the general point of my post is to pack for a worst case scenario, not to throw the scope at the concrete. Aus Post is just as good as the other couriers.(within their size limits of course)

My latest scope is an f/8.5 Astro-Physics. Its pretty long. It travelled Hong Kong to Canberra EMS no problems whatsoever in a cardboard box with a 6" layer of bubble wrap. Seller simply removed the dewshield and sent that seperately with the rings etc.

I suggest if you really like the scope, and especially if it is one that is not easily user-collimatable, fly over or catch the Spirit or paddle a kayak but don't send it via Pack and Send unless it is wrapped in bubble wrap and then fitted inside a Pelican case..... If you must use Pack and Send, don't use the Online P&S, go to a P&S Depot instead and do a Depot to Depot so no courier gets to touch it. That way it travels in a cage from depot to depot.

Of course the cheapest option is to buy a boat, cruise over to Melbourne, pack the scope, cruise back and sell the boat... ;)

Double...tripple...more than three times agree with this.

Also, make sure you explain to them exactly what the thing is, what it's used for, what it's replacement value is and make sure that they physically see what's inside the boxes and take delivery at a storefront.

Even that won't save you if they lose it or damage it. Their shipping does not cover 'scientific equipment' and has only limited application to recovery of $$ if it's damaged or lost.

Just received a parcel that was sent from Tas to outskirts of Brisbane, via Australia Post, that took 10 days. It sat languishing in NSW for most of that time.

I used Greyhound when shipping a 10" Meade SCT and was very impressed.

Does need to be packed well of course.
