Jupiter and Saturn in very good seeing from Melbourne

Hi everyone,

With Saturn just two days from opposition decided to shoot both Saturn and Jupiter from Melbourne last night due to a good Skippy Weather forecast.

The centre of the High front was just past Melbourne providing near perfect conditions (for Melbourne!).

Hope others got out there.

John they are fabulous shots. I too was out there in the cold after midnight and can vouch for the good seeing. I saw the best visual observation of Saturn through my humble 8 inch f5 Newt using a 2.5X TV Powermate and 6mm eyepiece. I have never seen such detail and colour before as I saw last night. I also took some shots with my Canon 550d but I'll be posting them on the beginners section where they belong. No competition with yours, they are right up there with the best I've seen. You have a lovely set up for planetary work and your processing is spot on. Thanks for sharing.

John, those shots you were able to produce are exquisite, top quality images and are right up the with the best going round. Damian's are brilliant no doubt, very fine detail in the many rings and cloud bands circling the planet, but considering your setup and conditions here in Melbourne, well you must be quite content with what you've consistently imaged of these two gas giants.

Really lovely views, fantastic detail on Jupiter in particular.

How do you find Skippy on the seeing forecasts? I find it quite hit-and-miss, seems to underplay the impact of the jetstream on some nights (though on other nights the jetstream does indeed seem to be less important than popular wisdom suggests).

I tend to look at Skippy and the two sites below - and if they all point to good seeing then something is up.

If Skippy is showing extra dark blue for seeing and the wind is an Easterly, then Melbourne rocks on the seeing scales but it only happens a few times a year I'm afraid!

But, uhhh, i dont know, but the Juup image, I just see it like you have 'too hard cut, the limb, if know what im sayin, looks like looking the a perfectly cut round glass window, and the planets details dont match that sharpness on the edge, kind of looks unnatural to me, , mind you, dont get me wrong, the planetary details are very very nice indeed - the envy of the many im sure :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
