Can someone tell me how all that black around the subject got there? Don't say it's called "space". haha Is this the venetting (spelling?) ? It is a afocal shot through my 60mm refractor with a 25mm ep and some zooming with the Fuji S5000 camera...

Hi champ
My guess is that the black you see is the eyepiece section around the glass because the camera lens hasn't quite got flush with the section of the eyepice you see through. I've done it a few times myself when taking shots afocally, I'd show some examples but I deleted them all. I've got a Moonfish wide angle 10mm eyepiece which is great for afocal pics especially lunar pics when using a barlow because it can accomodate the camera lens with ease. Don't know if they sell them down under. Heres the site though. Moonfishgroup.com

Hi Champ, the word your'e looking for is vignetting, not enough light getting to the image plane,I think quicksimon is on the right track it looks like the camera has not been held square to the EP,it makes it looks like you are shooting through a straw, try different EP's for afocal till you find the right one.
cheers
david.

EDIT also try moving the camera away from the EP,it should not be sitting right on top EP's have a eye relief, the spacing between your eye and the EP, the camera will need this as well.

David.

Hello Champ and welcome, zoom in with the optical zoom until you loose the vignetting on the camera screen if you can or try using a 32mm EP as westsky has suggested.

Hello champ,
I've tried the same with a fuji s304 . I attached the camera to the telescope with minimum distance between the camera lens and a 25mm eyepiece and found that by adjusting the zoom increased magnification and reduced vignetting could be achieved.I think as is mentioned above an eyepiece with a larger lens will reduce the effect further.Have attached a picture that i took of copernicus this way last year. I have reduced the resolution down to 320x240 for this post , it was a 3megapixel pcture.

Thanks everyone!! I will get to try again this weekend if the weather is good. And a co-worker is going to loan me some other eyepieces...
