What, hang on, you don't have $55,000 US spare to buy a camera? Silly man.

Great thread JA.
This has inspired me to pull the asi1600mm off the end of my scope and use it for achromatic architectural photography!
Also might experiment with true rgb terrestrial photos.
Thanks JA!

Fuji GFX is a 36mm square 50mp medium format for about AUD$10K. Pentax 645 and Hasselblad mirrorless also have the same Sony 50mp sensor.

There are also rumours of a new Nikon - a D810 replacement, possibly D820 or D850 which is rumoured at 45-46MPixels

It isn't necessarily good at high ISO and low noise like full frame and APSc have now evolved. I can't comment on this exact model but I was under the impression these types of cameras get noisy at higher ISO.

Hi Greg,

I'm certainly not advocating for the use of these medium format cameras as the price-performance ratio is somewhat extreme, however if I had to generalize (and I hate that), i'd suggest the reverse regarding their noise performance and certainly their dynamic range based on measures I've seen where they are class leaders by typically more than 1 to maybe 2 stops* in dynamic range with excellent high and low iso performance compared with what's commercially available in FF and APS sensors. Of course their price is unpalatable compared with some of the excellent Full Frame and APS sensors, that's for sure.

I guess I was thinking of some older comparisons between the Nikon D800e when it first came out and a Pentax 645 medium format.

I just had a look at DPR's studio comparison tool. It looks like Pentax 645 and Fuji GFX50 are a tad noisier than the latest full frames. Make sense as full frame is where most of the R and D is being spent on digital cameras.
