Trying to decide between the Apple iPad Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Pro. Reviews place the iPad ahead of the Galaxy Pro but has anyone used both these tablets and can give pro's and con's. Want it for general net surfing and to run stellarium style software to operate my NJP mount.

The iPad has a better digitizer and overall better UI. The Samsung is a lot more practical because of its file system and USB connectivity. I have an old TAB -3 that I still use with Stellarium, sky safari pro 5, team viewer, etc... no problems at all. And backing it up is as simple as dumping its content to my PC via USB.

I initially tried a Galaxy a while back......I am sure things have improved but at the time I found Astronomy and other apps were limited and the inbuilt compass & GPS were not very reliable or precise (all important for stellarium Apps)

Since then I have stayed with iPad and have found them to be faultless.

Astro App choices that work extremely well with Tak/Temma mounts from SkySafari to Astromist as well as polar scope apps and inclinometers and compass.

I have found a couple of Inclinometer, Compass & GPS apps that are very accurate.

My current version is the iPad Pro 9.7 with 256gb, advanced 4g, GPS, 3 Axis Gyro, Accelerometer, Barometer and ambient light sensor.

It costs a little more but IMO is worth it for the extra features, apps and stability.

Hi Hans

I have both an iPad Mini and a Galaxy S. I prefer the Galaxy S as it has 65Gb micro SD storage for photos and PDF's. I am running Sky Safari on the Galaxy S with no problems. Astronomy apps are limited in Goodle Play though, which is also why I have an iPad Mini for those apps only available in iTunes Store. My only bugbear with Apple is being locked into the Apple world.

Cheers Pete

Android software for a Samsung locks you into their world. And do you also crow about Windows programs that only run on windows?

That is indeed true. Still better than being locked into the Apple world.

Still prefer the Samsung though. I use it far more than my iPad.

That doesn't make any sense. How is one lock-in any better than another? If you're averse to lock in, you may as well turn everything off and sit in the dark

I also note that the important App ...ie the astronomy app selection is limited and 65gb as compared to 256gb inbuilt storage.

Have to say I'm not seeing the advantages at all either apart from a predjudice against Apple

And definitely annoying to have to have 2 tablets when one can do everything ....

The Comment was "Apple World" not just locked into IOS.

Windows software can be downloaded anyware. You are not locked into the "Microsoft World".

Same with Android. You are not locked into the "Google World". You can download third part apps from many source. Not just the App store.

Like most I have both. But I rarly use the Ipad anymore.

All of this "Lock In" discussion is basically narrow-minded rhetoric IMO

I choose my devices based on experience and fit for purpose not based on what is or isn't popular and because it's brand.

Reality is:

If you buy a Android device you have to choose apps available to Android.

If you but a Windows device you have to choose apps available to Windows

If you but a Apple device you have to choose apps available to Apple

The only real difference is that Apple IOS Apps are purchased through one interface (iTunes).......but there are many different App choices and many different developers that provide Apps through iTunes.

IMO it makes searching, managing and paying for Apps very quick, easy and simple.

Putting all of that Aside people should just purchase the device that best suits their needs and budget and ignore all the Anti-Apple/Anti-Windows/Anti-Android rhetoric.

if youre just running astro stuff & net surfing not sure why you would need a 256Gb model, the lowest storage will do.
if u cn find one the nexus tablets are good value, they run a vanilla (plain) operating system of android & would handle hat u need

i think ipad pro is overkill, if your not going to hook in the keyboard just get the std ipad & save yourself $300
