Hi all,

Here's another from my stay over at Zane's observatory.

Read and view here (http://members.optusnet.com.au/mrozycka/Magellan_Observatory/Magellan_Observatory_20061125_Witch _Head_Nebula.html).

Warning: file is approximately 1.25 MB in size.

As always, comments and critique welcome.

as always, the presentation is superb and I love the nebula!

with some of the brighter stars, they seem to have dark lanes at opposite ends to each other - what would cause those? almost like negative diffraction spikes.

I really like looking at this!

lovely image H, but could you enlighten me as to the split halo's of the brighter stars? did you have something on/in the optical train to make that?

Another fine image, H.

What bright star is causing the massive flare in the lower bottom right?

Very nice image Humayan, this must be a very faint object I have looked for it visually a few times and seen nothing. Clear skies Ken

David,

Cheers, mate. :)

I have absolutely no idea what's caused them. I'll have to speak to Zane and see if I can find an answer. It didn't happen in any of the other images that I took with the exact same configuration.

Thanks!

Humayun

David,

Thanks. :)

As mentioned to davidpretorius, I have no idea what's caused them, as they didn't appear in any of the other images taken with the same set up.

My only guess is that it could be caused by the reflection from Rigel in the bottom right of the screen? I don't know how, but, that's my only guess.

Humayun

Mike,

Thanks, again. :)

I'm not entirely over the Moon with this image due to the reflection from Rigel, but, there's always next time. :)

Eric,

I haven't got my camera modified just yet. The equipment I used was Zane Hammond's (astroboy) at Magellan Observatory.

I may end up modifying my camera myself as Dave Burren seems to be very busy.

As for difference, there's a massive difference! It's worth it.

Humayun

Andrew,

Thanks, mate. :)

It's an interesting object. I think there's some theories which say that it's a part of Bernard's Loop, whilst others say it's a supernova remnant. In either case, it makes you wonder what happened up there to cause it.

Humayun

Mike,

Thanks!

The reflection is from Rigel. I thought that perhaps some kind of gradient removal would remove it, but, I had too much difficulty, so just left it in. I know it detracts from the image; I'll have to redo it some time.

Tony,

Cheers, mate.

I'm not too happy with it, and will re-image it when I get my new equipment.

Ken,

It's an extremely faint object. I wonder if it is actually visible through a telescope?

I had to push hard in the processing to bring it out, and that's with 2 hours of exposure at ISO-800. I may have needed longer sub-exposures. Next time!

Humayun

Absolutely brilliant - This object is also on APOD http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap061211.html.

Both excellent.

Great shot Octane. Its amazing how you can get these photo with a canon EOS. There looks like to small galaxys in the top right hand side.

An interesting exercise would be to see how many galaxies one can pick out of the image.

Cheers Petra
