Mods please forgive me for sharing somebody else's image, but just wow, I've never seen the details in this object before as they are presented here. :jawdrop:

Not sure if you'll get a chance to see this elsewhere so thought I'd share it here - Mega congrats to Gendler/Colombari/Schedler et al.

That's it, M78 is now conclusively done :eyepop:

Incredible detail in that image and then I read that the data came from Suburu.
None of us will ever achieve detail like that unfortunately.

Ok, so who after seeing that (Thanks Andy), isn't game for some sort of a crack ? Come on, admit it! It's only an 8.2m f/1.8 scope, mixed in with data from a few other scopes, all having to compete with the atmosphere, just like everyone else, except Hubble and Co. You never know how close you get, until ......

Thats stunning - thankyou.

Please let a newbie ask a question - Am curious - lets assume M78 is 10 Light years diameter and 1,600 light years from Earth

Draw an imaginary sphere 1,600 lightyears in radius with centre in my backyard in Victoria.

Have the fancy big telescopes , by now, "looked" at every "10 square lightyear" of that spherical surface and taken all of the possible stunning photos on that spherical surface that are equivalent to this current M78 photo ?
