I was inthe city doing a library seminar yesterday and after I decided to head to bintel. outside they have a box with thier newsletter, so i grabed one and had a read on the way home...

has anyone here got the april edition yet? I looked on the website but they dont have the pdf up yet.
anyhow in column 3 (front page) I notice where they wrote about the star party someof you guy went to that an unnamed group of astronomers (i am guessing it was you guys) were upset that noone inthe group got a lucky door prize. :D

hey any publicity is good isnt it?! ;)
if only they put you names there in bold!!

wish I had the night sky here so I could quote it directly:confuse3:

Sounds like there was good reason to criticise the event, would loved to have been there. I would have got the rule book out and examined the criteria for judging and awarding prizes. Nothing like a bit of nepotism to get people all stirred up. I think at the very least they should have given reasons for their awards.

Anyway sounds like someone has read the articles posted here and sent the info to Bintel. I don't think that it can be said that the articles were complaining about not winning, they were complaining about the innept approach to awarding prizes. I think that if someone has to be inpersona for a raffle draw that does not include one of your friends claiming for you.

Anyway, I don't think that this is the right sort of publicity that we want. It will just make people think we are a bunch of sore loosers.

Just my opinion.

well too right bout that one paul. but the newsletter didnt name anyone and i only guessed that it was talking bout iceinspacers... its quite posible that there were other astronomy groups there that complaineded about the fairness too.

it is also quite posible that since we have a name for ourselves now that one of the bintel guys were browsing and found the info themselves.

yes these events need to be run more fairly. tho I cant really coment as i wasnt there.

Mike Kerr has addressed those issues in his reply, so I'm not keen to go over that old ground again anyway.

No point fostering any ill feeling or bad blood, cause I certainly have none. Yes of course I think things could've been done differently, and mine and Rod's feedback has been taken onboard by the guys at ASNSW.

The Bintel newsletter thing just sounds like a bit of humour, I'm certainly not taking it as a negative. It would be most unlike them to try and be nasty about it.. it wouldn't do them or us any favours..

post script: the said publicity, if it had our name to it may very well have made us look like sore loser but it would have also made the event organiser look biased. that could work in favour of people who go next time. it would have also alerted our presence to the greater community that may not have gone to the event and reads the newsletter.
but as i said, no names were mentioned and it may not have been us anyhow. :)

and here's the quote Ving was referring to:

The door prize and the astrophotography comp were separate grumbles.. and the "conspiracy" claims (even though it wasn't worded as that) was very tongue-in-cheek..

Anyway.. take it as you will.
