Hi guys!!
The 5th annual Sydney Chilli challenge is on again this Saturday (25/2/17) at the Hawkesbury Hotel in Windsor...
For those who haven't heard of it, it's NSW's largest Chilli event, and is raising money for Soldier On. The event involves a number of chilli-eating competitions, as well as a chilli pie and chilli sausage eating competition. Its a family friendly event with a couple of kid-friendly challenges (Snow-cone 'Chilly' challenge and watermelon eating comps), as well as over 20 stalls selling a huge variety of chilli products, including everything from sauces to salts and powders to plants.
All proceeds will go towards helping young returned veterans suffering from PTSD with the goal of reducing the suicide rate among our soldiers.
If you're free, come along and spice it up!!
Cheers
Davin

Sounds class (and hot!) folks, unfortunately it's my daughter's birthday tomorrow but I will be with you in spirit- to show that spirit and my appreciation for the chilli growing advice I have received on ICE IN SPACE, I just donated my $15 to Soldier On via PayPal.
And for those who are wondering how Hobart chilly growing ended up- well they are still going- I had a bucket load of jalopenos and now have some habeneros- some the size of bananas!! all from shop rescued seeds. ( recycled from bought chillis)
Good luck in the tasting !!!:D

This arvo I made a chilli paste from my Carolina Reapers and Trinidad Scorpions. Mega hot and will keep for months in the fridge (I froze some too). Unfortunately I was silly enough not to wear gloves (again!), so my hands have been burning for a few hours now and I better not touch anything sensitive...LOL

I have some chili plants growing on my balcony in pots - seeds obtained from some dried chili pods.
A recent study in the US (researchers at the University of Vermont College of Medicine) claims that there is a 13% increase in life expectancy if chili is prominent in a person's daily diet.

(always be skeptical of surveys and even sound scientific studies. You need to look at the sample size, hwo the study was carried out, what was the nature of the sample population etc. People who eat chili usually also eat garlic and other vegetables, so what is the study really measuring? I love chili by the way, and the round chilies I am growing at the moment are super hot - maybe 300,000 Scoville units. I am thinking of grinding a new mirror using chili paste)

Hi Peter .
My little habanero plants about 100,000 on the Scovelle scale ,
just keep on producing almost non stop ; so prolific I wonder how they do it with no special fertilizer at all!!
PS: And yes , one does have to question these so called surveys.

Picking up on the cautionary words below about wearing gloves:
I decided to harvest some of the peppers on my bush that grew at my bush shed site. The plan was to make a ready-to-use Chili paste for cooking. SO wife and I set about harvesting and blending with ginger and garlic and some olive oil and then putting into ice-block tubs for freezing and storage.
On the same weekend we had also done a home-bottling of some bulk wine we had bought from a vineyard up in Qld's Granite Belt. So we were combining our Chili harvest with a "first-bottling" tasting of our bush red. Bad combination.
I was on harvesting and chopping the chilis. After an hour or so and a few reds, I decided I needed to step behind a tree and did so without thinking about the chili juices on my hands. The result was excruciating. My wife could barely stand for laughing at the sight of me on hands and knees over a bucket of water sluicing water onto my offended parts.
It was not my finest hour.

Hi Peter
Being a chilli lover myself , even in my bolognese etc. After a few glasses of shiraz just last night myself also , I've stepped out for a call of nature ........ and suffered the consequences ! MOTHER !!!!!@!
