Cambroon Astronights in December

:hi: There are two weekends at Cambroon in December, the weekend of the
16/17th and the following weekend 23/24th.

The last quarter Moon rises at 01:55 on the morning of the 17th in Brisbane, but at least half an hour later at Cambroon due to my elevation and 15deg hill in the east.

The 23rd maybe a little close to Christmas for some people, but if you would like to make it a double weekend you are quite welcome.

Please indicate which weekend you are attending.

Hi Ron, i am hoping to come down on the Saturday/Sunday of the 16/17th weekend depending on which O/N of that weekend seems most popular. The Fraser Coasts monthly meeting is the 23rd so that week beforehand could work well pending transport arrangements.

As mentioned in another thread my only weekend off now until next year is the 16th & 17th. I am hoping to come for a visit that weekend Ron, but that may also be my only chance to see my 7 year old son for Christmas thsi year.

I may or may not also be seeing my mother, brothers and sisters, etc, the same weekend. All I can say is that after Christmas with family ..... an astro get together IS 2nd on my list, and I'll let you know as soon as I know myself.

As you know, we are having overseas guests with us for a month from the 13th. I don't think I would be allowed a night off (they are my wife's brother and his family). So my next night at Cambroon probably won't until January.

You should make a bit of a Xmas party of the night - you know, everyone bring some food and drink, have a good night with friends:drink: . Oh, you could do a bit of viewing as well;) .

Gregs work party is on the 16th. Lawn bowls followed by kareoke at the pub. I'd much rather be with you guys.

I am a chance for the 23rd as well. My work's christmas party is a lunch on the 17th, so it kind of knocks out that weekend.

I'm pleased to say it looks like I can shuffle seeing my family for Christmas, AND still squeeze in a night of socialising and viewing at Ron's on the 16th.

I believe my brother Don will be coming along again too (he hasn't been out to Ron's for a few months). He now has a Celestron 65mm "mini-mak spotting scope (http://shop.centre.net.au/index.html?&redir=shop.centre.net.au&rid=000004&it=product&prid=00120N)" that hasn't seen a really dark sky yet. It's a cute little package.

Looking forward to catching up with everyone who can make it!

Work/Uni and other commitments are preventing me from attending this coming weekend, but when things normalise in the new year i will be down for a night.

:hi: It was a very dark night at Cambroon, not a light in sight except the lightening from the north:P we had a power blackout for about six hours, unfortunatly no observing was possible because it was cloudy and drizzling.
A couple of my small trees got brocken but there was no other damage from the storm that came through the Sunshine Coast Wide Bay area about 16:30, there was some damage in the Esk Toogoolawa area (JJJ may have some info on that area?) but otherwise all is well.
Hopfully will get some observing time this next week.

The storm hit our house (Tewantin) about 7.30pm last night. We had rain then hailstones bigger than golf balls (like medium sixed mandarins or tomatoes).
The pommy visitors were very impressed. Wrecked the garden though:mad2: . Then we lost power for about 6 hours. We all sat around and drank (couldn't cook anything) til about midnight then crawled to bed. Some very sore heads this morning.

We still have some clouds hanging around tonight. The poms are keen on having a look through my scope, so I'm going to have a night viewing at home the first chance I get. A few nights ago looked great, but by the time I set up the scope, the clouds had rolled in:mad2: . Isn't it always the way.

Ron,
Kilcoy township copped it this time. Hail shredded trees,wind blew branches down, and windows broken everywhere.
We were lucky, just wind and lots of rain, 36mm. The grass is green already.

Sounds like you folks took the brunt of the system, the southern bay area saw it coming all afternoon from the south west. By 6.45pm we had heaps of fireworks, wind and 2" of very cold rain from the remnants, bark and small branches everywhere but no real damage.

I had a friend tell me today that Lake Mcdonald (N-E of Cooroy) where he lives, was hit hard. 600mm diameter trees snapped off. Power poles pulled out or snapped off. Trees down everywhere. Trees smashed through homes. He spent most of yesterday with a chain saw helping people clean up.
When he left for work this morning they were STILL without power. However, they did get a phone call from Energex asking how they were, and if there was anythig they could do. He said the Energex workers have been working 24 hours a day since the storm. Saturday and Sunday nights he could see their flood lights and hear their generators going.
