Hi all,
I'm heading out to snake valley (Victoria) soon for my first night of star gazing. Is the recreational reserve the best place to set up? And can you camp there? Thanks in advance.

Next star party in March may be a good time...
We went to Snake Valley from Ballarat in December, just to see where things are..

Thanks for your response bojan. But I'm not interested in going with others. I want to go once on my own to get acquainted with my equipment.

If you are are thinking of going out to Snake Valley, you may want to give Ken James a call. You will find his details on the Snake Valley Astronomical Association web site. He is President of the Assoc and you will not find a more easy going and casual guy with a great knowledge on astronomy.

You'll be able to contact Ken through this link http://ballaratman.wix.com/svaa
If the weather is cooperative you will usually find members out there the Friday and Saturday closest to New moon.

The Bi Annual Camp is at Crystal Lake Cabins. Be aware that the facility is held on a private lease so it is not open for use outside of the camp. As John said the observatory site at Kens place often has people there on the Fridays around new moon and if you join the SVAA you can go there whenever you like.
There is a recreation reserve but not 100% sure where it is, I think it is closer to Carngham. Usually camping is not allowed at recreation reseves without permission. Best bet if wanting to go is to contact Ken, his number is 0418 425207 and the website is here http://ballaratman.wix.com/svaa#!contact
If interested in the camp (we don't bite), drop me a line by PM or on 52313048
Cheers
Malcolm
